US congressman warns of risk of nuclear war

Senator James David Vance believes that US President Joe Biden’s decisions increase the risk of a new world war.

“I just spoke to a friend I trust about what’s going on in Russia. I think the risk of nuclear war is higher than at any time in my lifetime. Biden is sleepwalking into World War 3,” Senator James David Vance wrote on social network X on June 2.

Previously, in an interview with CNN late last year, Mr. Vance, a Republican senator from Ohio, said he opposed sending more aid to Ukraine, because he did not believe that Kiev would be able to overwhelm Russia.

Mr. Vance also questioned why providing billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine would help Kiev at this point in the conflict with Russia, while previous aid had not ended the conflict.

“It is in the best interests of the United States to accept that Ukraine will have to cede some territory to Russia and that this war needs to end,” he said.

Vance said that no one believes Ukraine can win a war with Russia, explaining that the main focus should be on ending the conflict and casualties in the region.

Vance’s warning about the risk of nuclear war comes as Ukraine has asked the United States and other Western countries to ease restrictions on the use of foreign weapons to allow Kiev to use them to attack Russian territory.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on May 31 that President Biden had authorized Ukraine to use US-supplied weapons to attack targets inside Russia.

However, White House National Security Spokesman John Kirby said that Ukraine would only be allowed to target bases, artillery positions and other military sites “that Russia is using to create some kind of buffer zone.”

The US decision comes after Russian troops launched a new offensive in eastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv region last month and took control of several villages along the border.

Kirby said President Biden “understood all the consequences” of allowing Ukraine to use US weapons “for counterattack purposes”.

According to Kirby, President Biden has said he does not want to be responsible for starting World War III and the US does not want a conflict with Russia, a nuclear power.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on May 28 that representatives of NATO countries “should be aware of what game they are playing” by allowing Ukraine to launch attacks on Russian territory. According to Putin, Russia is closely monitoring such plans.

Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev also said that all long-range weapons transferred to Ukraine “are under the direct control of NATO servicemen”, warning that such actions could lead to retaliatory strikes.

Any US attack on Russian targets would trigger a world war, Medvedev said. He said the West would be making a “fatal mistake” if it thought Russia was not ready to use tactical nuclear weapons against Ukraine. He also spoke of the possibility of attacking hostile countries with strategic nuclear weapons.
