Danganronpa 2 A Complete Guide to Gifts
Amidst the carnage and chaos in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, players still have the opportunity to bond with the characters. From Hajime Hinata’s perspective, they can do this by choosing to spend Free Time with any of their classmates – at least the ones who are still alive.
Spending time with their classmates and witnessing Events during their Free Time can earn players Hope Fragments, which will eventually unlock useful rewards in class trials. However, Hajime may need more than just his presence and a few words to get the others to open up. By giving the right gifts at the right time, he will be able to grow closer to his classmates.
Updated on February 19, 2023 by Demaris Oxman: Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is an excellent sequel to a niche but beloved series. While some fans found the third game disappointing, the second game remains a favorite among many. Its popularity is due in no small part to the excellent cast of characters that Hajime can befriend during his free time on the island. However, with limited time and Monocoins, it can be difficult for players to decide who to befriend. With that in mind, this guide has been updated with more information on the benefits of befriending each student, as well as additional details on where to find gifts in Danganronpa 2.
Where and How to Get Gifts
There are two different ways to buy gifts for classmates in Danganronpa 2. One has a limited but safe selection; the other has a wide selection, but relies on luck of the draw.
The Monomono Yachine Location
Like its predecessor, Danganronpa 2 allows players to try their luck in a gashapon-style game. By inserting Monocoins, Hajime will receive a gift to give to one of his classmates. The MonoMono Yachine is located on the Beach of the first island.
Inserting more coins will reduce the chance of getting a gift repeatedly. However, having multiple identical items is not necessarily a bad thing. Many students share the same Like or Favorite gifts, and characters will not refuse gifts they have received before. Generally, using just one coin will still get the player a gift that someone will like, so don’t waste coins.
Vending Machines in Danganronpa 2
At the Rocketpunch Market on the first island, the player can find a vending machine. For a few Monocoins, Hajime can buy snacks, drinks, and a few other cheap items. Don’t be fooled by the low price – some of Hajime’s classmates will be happy to receive a bottle of ramune or a bag of sunflower seeds.
For a slightly higher price of 50 Monocoins, the vending machine also sells items that unlock bonus scenes. However, if the player’s goal is to make friends with classmates, don’t spend money on these – they are not viable gifts.
Where to Find Monocoins
Players will earn some Monocoins at the end of each trial, depending on how well they perform in the mini-games. They can also be found hidden around the island by investigating various objects. To find Monocoins, just investigate everything!
Liked Gifts and Favorite Gifts
Hajime should give his friends Liked gifts during his first few conversations with them until he gets two or three Hope Fragments with that character. After that, Favorited gifts will be needed to get the remaining Hope Fragments.
Other gifts fall into separate categories of Neutral, Disliked, or Hated. However, don’t worry too much about these other categories. It’s best to avoid giving any character a gift that isn’t on their Like or Love list, as it won’t increase their friendship with Hajime. So the latter is the most important thing to remember.
Players about to give a gift to Sonia Nevermind
At first glance, the purpose of giving gifts in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair may not be obvious. As a visual novel with a fixed scenario, the protagonist’s relationship with other characters does not affect the plot. However, building friendships has a purpose in the game, beyond simply exploring the world and characters. By collecting Hope Fragments, Hajime can unlock skills to use in class tests. Obtaining each student’s fifth Hope Fragment will unlock a special skill, each with a different effect.
Knowing which skills each classmate unlocks can help players decide who to spend their limited free time with. They are all useful, but some players may find certain skills more useful than others, depending on which mini-games tend to give them trouble in the Class Trials. Skills unlocked by building friendships with classmates in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair include:
Classmate | Skill | Effect |
---|---|---|
Akane Owari | Peach Muscle | Increases rate of fire for Truth Bullets. |
Byakuya Togami | Sting | Increases the number of Monocoins earned. |
Chiaki Nanami | Cheat Code | The time limit in Nonstop Debates does not decrease. |
Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu | Silver Spoon | When Hajime misses or answers incorrectly, the damage he takes is reduced. |
Gundham Tanaka | Infinity Unlimited Flame | Shooting down White Noise in Nonstop Debates becomes easier. |
Hiyoko Saionji | Pivot Turn | During the Closing Argument, any panels that do not fit into the narrative will be erased. |
Ibuki Mioda | Shred Guitar | Increases acceleration speed during Logic Dive. |
Kazuichi Soda | Handiwork | The player can reload two bullets at once during Panic Talk Action |
Mahiru Koizumi | Auto Focus | When concentrating in Nonstop Debates, the player will automatically target the weak spot. |
Mikan Tsumiki | Silent Massage | Increases the Focus Gauge’s recharge rate. |
Nagito Komaeda | Trance | During Panic Talk Action, lower combos will increase tempo. |
Nekomaru Nidai | Power of Life & Death | Pushing through an opponent’s statements in a Rebuttal Showdown becomes easier. |
Peko Pekoyama | Lightning Flash | Counterattacks are more powerful during the Rebuttal Showdown. |
Sonia Nevermind | Envious Influence | Increases the capacity of the Influence Gauge. |
Teruteru Hanamura | Tasting | Arguments in the Nonstop Debate and Rebuttal Showdown are limited to three statements or fewer. |
Each Character’s Favorites
Below, players can find a complete list of each character’s Favorite Gifts – the gifts they should bring when attempting to complete some of that character’s most recent Free Time Events. Since many characters have dozens of gifts in their Favorites list, a few are listed here, while players can find links to comprehensive lists on each player’s wiki page.
Akane Owari
With her insatiable appetite, the feisty gymnast Akane will rarely turn down a snack. Almost any food item from a Vending Machine or MonoMono Yachine will do, but here are some of her favorites.
Loves:
- Prepackaged Orzotto
- Potpurri Center
Likes:
- Ramune
- Dried Chocolate Chips
- Cod Roe Bread
- Sweet Bag
- Moon Stone
Byakuya Togami
Like Akane, Byakuya is not one to turn down snacks. However, his preferences are different, as the player can see below. Also, as someone of wealthy origin (or rather – spoiler – someone pretending to be from a wealthy family), he appreciates the finer things in life.
Loves:
- Chocolate Chip Dried
- Bag of Sweets
- Cocoshimi
- Black Rabbit Picture Book
Likes:
- Prepackaged Orzotto

Chiaki Nanami
Everyone’s favorite gamer girl is among Hajime’s easier-to-please classmates. With a fairly large list of Favorites and a few other Likes, it’s not too hard to find something she’ll like. Predictably, she’ll be happy to receive anything related to video games as well as other fun trinkets and knick-knacks.
Love:
- Tips & Tricks 2nd Edition
- Power Glove
- Nitro Racer
- Potpourri Century
- Test Tube Rose
- Skull Mask
Like:
- Viva Ice
- Sunflower Seeds
- Hope Peak Ring
- Slap Bracelet
Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu
Fuyuhiko is one of the harder characters to befriend, partly because he’s only willing to talk after Chapter 3. Furthermore, his Love list is extremely short – although he does have a lot of Likes. Food isn’t the way to his heart, but he does seem to enjoy odd collectibles.
Loves:
- Antique Dolls
- Stardust
Likes:
- Non-Alcoholic Wine
- Iroha T-Shirt
- Golden Case
- Mysterious Sword Book
Gundham Tanaka
Gundham is an eccentric character and his favorite hobbies reflect that. This lovably quirky animal lover will appreciate anything related to the occult or the strange. Additionally, his Four Dark Devas’ snack (i.e. sunflower seeds) is high on his list.
Loves:
- Sunflower Seeds
- Crushed Evil’s Earrings
- Small Degenerate Reactor
- Angel Fruit
Likes:
- Blue Ram
- Falkor’s Silencer
- Phantom Ring
- Jabba the Frog
Hiyoko Saionji
For players willing to put up with Hiyoko’s annoying attitude, keep an eye out for elegant, feminine items. Her favorite gifts reflect her appearance rather than her personality; most are childish or girly.

- “Act 10 Poem” article
- Potpourri Century
- Test tube roses
Likes:
- Coconut water
- Jabbaian jewelry

Ibuki Mioda
Similar to Chiaki, Ibuki is probably the easiest to make friends with. Her Favorites list is longer than most, and her Favorites include dozens of items. Fitting her talents, most are music-themed; however, she also enjoys snacks and fun toys.

Mahiru Koizumi

- Century Potpourri
- Test Tube Roses
- Mini Dress
Likes:
- Popular Handbook

Mikan Tsumiki
Many of Mikan’s best gifts relate to her talent as a nurse, but there are plenty of other gifts on her list. Vending machine snacks and drinks aren’t exactly the way to go, but Mikan seems to enjoy things that are both useful and pretty.
Loves:
- Queen’s Coat
- Mr. Staple
- Bandages
Likes:
- Half-Head Safety Shoes
- Passion Glasses
- Silver Ring
- Ogami Family Code
- Infrared Thermometer
Nagito Komaeda
Many fans believe that Nagito cannot truly be understood, and that his greatest gifts don’t offer much insight. Like Nagito himself, these items and their descriptions range from uplifting to strangely disturbing. It is worth noting that he has the least number of Liked gifts, with only 8.
Loved:
- Hope Peak Ring
- Memo Pad
- Mukuro’s Knife
Liked:
- Clove of Hope
- Another Hope
- Kick Away
- Secret Wind Sword Book
Nekomaru Nidai
The best gifts from the ever-enthusiastic Nekomaru are varied. Of course, a few are sports-related; however, others seem a little out of place. It seems that the Ultimate Leader’s interests far outweigh his talents.
Loves:
- Coconut

- Ogami Clan Code
- Sand God’s Storm Horn
Likes:
- Light-colored Jeans
- Popular Guidebook
- Snow Sea
- Tissue
Peko Pekoyama

- Light-Coloured Jeans
- Another Battle
- Potpourri Century
Likes:
- Cinnamon Tea
- Mesopotamia
- Timey Old Radio

Teruteru Hanamura
Danganronpa 2’s token escalation is defined as much by his lecherous nature as by his passion for cooking. It’s no surprise that many of his greatest gifts have sexual connotations; however, others highlight his talent as a chef.
Love:
- Passion Glasses
- Note Kiss
- Kokeshi Generator
Like:
- Male Pillar
- Measuring Bottle
- Gag
- Girl With a Bear Hairpin
