Euchre: A Fun Card Game You Can Play with Friends

If you’re looking for a card game to play, Euchre is one of the card games you’ll come across online. The game involves 24 cards and four people, with two competing against two for those unfamiliar with it.

Euchre is fun to play with friends, but there are also some downsides to playing the game. We discuss both the good and bad aspects of Euchre and give you a brief look at the rules below.

What Makes Euchre a Fun Card Game to Play with Friends

  1. Euchre is best-known for being a social game, and you can easily find Euchre players to play with in regions such as Michigan. The game’s simplicity makes chatting and catching up as you play easy.
  2. The game is fast-paced, with hands taking only a few minutes to finish. The game typically ends in around 30 minutes.
  3. The fast gameplay, coupled with the fact that the game extends over several hands, ensures that you’re never stuck with a bad hand for too long. Additionally, players can always hope for a loner and get their score up while also making a dramatic comeback.
  4. Euchre is light on rules and doesn’t take much effort to learn. However, the game involves enough strategic depth to reward good players.
  5. The game has its own local terminology in regions that it’s played, making the game that much more interesting. For instance, having nine points is called “being in the barn.” When players are in the barn, they may tease their opponents by mooing like a cow.

The Tedious Aspects of Euchre

  1. Games like Bridge are more involved, making Euchre seem too simplistic to players that know other trick-taking games. Furthermore, good players often plateau at the same skill level by following some ground rules. This makes the game less interesting over time.
  2. The results of Euchre are always influenced by luck.
  3. If you live in a region that isn’t famous for Euchre, finding people that play the game can be challenging. You can easily find players enjoying Hearts and Spades, but not Euchre.
  4. Euchre is very easy to cheat at. The low number of cards make it easy for smart teammates to indicate what cards they have without getting caught.
  5. If players apply too many house rules, the game can become frustrating to play. Many games involve “stealing the deal,” where if a player manages to deal the cards, they become the dealer whether it’s their turn to be the dealer or not. This typically qualifies as cheating, but this is allowed on most tables to encourage players to pay attention.

Summary of Euchre Rules

The Aces are the highest-ranking cards in Euchre in all but the trump suit. The ranking of the trump suit makes it one of the most distinct card games out there. The Jack of the trump suit is called the “right bower” or “right bauer” and is considered the top-ranking card of the game.

The Jack in the suit with the same color as the trump suit is called the “left bower” or “left bauer” and is considered the second-highest ranking card in the game.

Teammates sit across each other, and all players have five cards in their hands. The four remaining cards in the deck are placed in the “kitty.” The kitty’s top card is flipped face upwards.

Starting from the player to the dealer’s left, any player may pass picking trump or “order it up,” meaning choose it as the trump. The face-up card is flipped back over, and the dealer puts it in their hand, replacing the card in the kitty with another card in their deck.

If all players pass from picking the trump, the dealer turns the face-up card upside down and picks the trump suit from the other three.

The player to the dealer’s left may begin the game by playing a card they choose. The players must follow suit, but they can play trump cards if they can’t. The winner of a trick becomes the leading player of the next trick.

The game is won by whichever team earns ten points. Scoring rules are as follows:

  • If the makers take 3 of 5 tricks, they earn a point.
  • If the makers take all five tricks, they earn two points.
  • The defenders earn two points if the makers take less than three tricks.
  • If a loner wins three of five tricks, they win a point.
  • If a loner wins all five tricks, they earn four points.

Euchre is typically played best 2 out of 3.

Euchre is one of those card games you should try playing at least once. If you can’t get together with friends yet, practice playing the game online for free at play euchre online.
