When Jeremy McClain took over as the school’s eighth Athletic Director, he knew he would have to roll up his sleeves and get to work helping build and create more opportunities not only for the department but, more importantly, for the school’s student-athletes.

Since announcing his hiring on April 8, 2019, McClain has done just that.

In the past year alone, McClain guided the Southern Miss track and field program into its inaugural Sun Belt Conference season, and the Golden Eagles responded with four team championships in women’s cross country, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball. Additionally, the school placed fourth in the Vic Bubas Cup, which is awarded annually to the Sun Belt’s annual all-sport champion based on a points system.

In the summer of 2022, McClain also announced a three-year strategic plan, #ToTheTop25, outlining a bold vision for the future of Golden Eagle Athletics, including 25 strategic initiatives to be completed by the end of calendar year 2025. Just 14 months after announcing the plan, the Department has met or exceeded 10 of the 25 goals.

His fundraising prowess has also been demonstrated through a record year in 2022-23 for total Eagle Club membership (2,871) and total donations ($2.3 million). He also continues to assist and advise on the educational journey of Golden Eagle student-athletes and collaborates with them to maximize their NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) opportunities during their time at the University.

McClain’s efforts to improve and enhance the Golden Eagle student-athlete experience can also be seen in the capital projects he has completed.

In fall 2020, the Bower Academic Center, located in Cook Library, opened. The new academic center provides an improved and expanded home for 400 Southern Miss student-athletes, while also improving the work areas for those who oversee these individuals’ progress toward their academic goals.

Additionally, the Wellness Center, which houses the volleyball program, opened as well as renovations to the home court of the beach volleyball program. Golden Eagle fans also enjoyed the newly installed lighting system that will benefit both the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as the Golden Eagle fans who attend Reed Green Coliseum.

Other facility upgrades include new LED lighting and a new video board in baseball, the installation of a new synthetic turf field at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field, along with a new sports medicine recovery pool and a new synthetic surface at MM Roberts Stadium.

More upgrades are expected at both Reed Green Coliseum and Pete Taylor Park in the coming years.

McClain’s ongoing mission to enhance the student-athlete experience at Southern Miss is not limited to performance in the classroom or on the field.

He hired the first-ever faculty member to oversee athletic counseling and performance, and the entire coaching staff and administrative staff completed the Mental Awareness Training course, becoming the first athletic department at a high school in the state to do so over the summer. in 2022.

During his first year on the job, McClain was tasked with recruiting new coaches for several sports, including the school’s first beach volleyball coach. He also better positioned the department for student-athlete development with the addition of a new position as Senior Associate AD for Student-Athlete Services.

His most difficult assignment at Southern Miss, however, came in the early months of 2020, as he provided sound leadership in helping guide the school through the COVID-19 pandemic.

McClain returns to campus after serving as Athletic Director at Troy University since August 2015. He served as Associate Director of Athletics at Southern Miss for three years before leaving Troy.

Under McClain’s leadership, the Troy football program won 31 games, tying for the most wins in three seasons by a Group of 5 conference school with Boise State and UCF. The Trojans won three straight games and won the Sun Belt Conference championship, while earning a national ranking and scoring a historic win over LSU during that time. Additionally, the football program had record attendance for three seasons.

The men’s basketball team won the 2017 Sun Belt Conference Tournament and made its first March Madness appearance since 2003, while the women’s basketball team won 82 games in four seasons with a pair of Sun Belt Conference Tournament titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances.

Troy finished third in the 2017-18 Bubas Cup, the Sun Belt Conference’s sports trophy; the best finish in Troy’s 13-year history in the tournament.

In terms of facilities, the long-awaited Troy North End Zone Football Facility broke ground in the fall of 2016 and opened in the summer of 2018. The $25 million facility is a modern home for the football program with new offices for coaches, locker rooms, weight rooms and team lounges. Additionally, the project added 400 luxury seats to Veterans Memorial Stadium and a new high-definition video board.

McClain spent his first year at Troy improving the fan experience by implementing several new game-day initiatives, launching a new ticketing system, and leading the redesign of the Athletics website, TroyTrojans.com.

In his previous tenure at Southern Miss, McClain oversaw the day-to-day operations of the Athletics Department and was responsible for revenue generation, including licensing, corporate development, fundraising, and ticket sales.

As the Golden Eagles’ chief fundraiser, McClain led a team that set a record for donations in 2013 for the annual fund and the Southern Miss Athletic Foundation as a whole. He was also responsible for securing funding and overseeing several major facility projects.

Prior to Southern Miss, McClain served as the Athletic Director at Delta State University for over five years, beginning in 2007. While at Delta State, McClain developed a plan to enhance student-athlete services.

McClain also increased donations to the school’s athletic department, helping secure funding for the first phase of the DSU Athletic Master Plan.

Delta State’s on-field success also increased under McClain. During his tenure, the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen won seven Gulf South Conference championships, five NCAA Regional titles and made 21 NCAA playoff appearances. In 2010, the football team appeared in the NCAA Division II National Championship, and in 2012, the baseball team finished runner-up in the NCAA Division II College World Series.

McClain won the business director’s chair at Delta State in 1999, where he became a Division II All-American football player. He also earned his MBA from Delta State in 2002. After graduating, he played five years of professional baseball.

He was a four-year letterman at his alma mater, during which he posted a 45-9 overall record, including a 15-0 season in 1999 as a senior. McClain helped lead the Statemen to the College World Series in 1996, and he was inducted into the Delta State Hall of Fame.

He is married to Christie Cannon of Calhoun City, Mississippi and the couple has three children, a son, Cannon, and daughters, Kate and Piper.
