But before moving to the other country for permanent residence it is worth learning about its culture and people. There are plenty of myths concerning the UAE and Dubai, so we will have a look at the couple of them.
Myth 1 – Dubai is an Arab city filled with Muslims, sheikhs and women in black
Only those who have never been to Dubai and believe that all the countries of the Persian Gulf are the same can think so. In fact, the city is perhaps the most “western” and democratic of all Arab cities. This is not Saudi Arabia, where even European women cannot go out with bare shoulders and head. Only 10% of the local population lives in the city, and the remaining 90% are foreigners, people from completely different countries of the world, with their own cultural characteristics and traditions. Nobody forces them to change their habitual way of life, besides, it is simply impossible for such a huge number of people even with a strong desire to impose all the rules of local residents.
In areas where foreigners are allowed to buy property, your neighbors are likely to be predominantly Europeans. Yes, they can be Arabs, but visiting Arabs from other countries, that is, the same foreigners as you. And you will meet representatives of the local population only in state institutions, shopping centers or other crowded places.
Of course, the cultural traditions and characteristics of the indigenous population of the UAE must be respected, including in Dubai.
- In particular, during the Muslim holy month of fasting, Ramadan, which takes place once a year, restaurants and cafes will be closed all day and will open only after sunset.
- Residents and visitors to the UAE are also asked to refrain from eating, drinking and smoking outdoors and in public places during the day during this period.
Myth 2 – real estate in Dubai is hot all the time and there is nothing to do
345 days a year are sunny in the emirate. But this does not mean that there is hellish heat here all the time. Indeed, there is heat, but only in summer. During this time, older people, as well as those who have small children, try to leave the country. The temperature in summer is often above +40°C. But in winter the average temperature does not exceed +25°C. In spring and autumn, the weather is also comfortable; it is not for nothing that these seasons are called “off-season” by the tourism industry. The sea temperature almost never drops below +25°C. Needless to say, in the city, with its developed infrastructure and quality of life, air conditioners are installed even at covered bus stops, so even in summer you will not have to suffer from heat and stuffiness.
As already mentioned, 90% of expatriates live in the city, and most of them, as you understand, come to the city to work and earn money. This city is a large metropolis in which not only resort, but also business life is in full swing. The city is located at the crossroads of air and sea trade routes between Europe, Africa and Asia and rightfully claims to be the largest center of business activity in the Middle East. There is almost everything for this:
- free economic zones, which house the regional headquarters of leading international companies,
- the largest seaport in the region with modern infrastructure,
- the operating Dubai International Airport
- and the new Sheikh Maktoum Airport, which, after commissioning, should become the biggest in the world.
Many call Dubai the “city of the future”, because it is amazing how a modern metropolis has grown so quickly and rapidly on the site of the desert with a developed network of roads, shopping centers that have everything, even ski slopes and ice arenas, water parks, a completely out of space metro. World-famous sports competitions and international exhibitions are regularly held here, popular world artists come to perform.
It is no coincidence that, according to Master Card, Dubai in 2012 became the eighth most visited city in the world, beating New York, Barcelona and Rome. Most of the myths simply cannot withstand the collision with such a reality.
