From Chiba to Okinawa: how to make the most out of your Japan trip

Nara: Nara Prefecture

    Topping our list as the most cost effective city in Japan is Nara, with a final cost efficiency score of 9.1 out of ten. Once the capital of Japan, this city is filled with temples and artwork dating back to the 8th century. As well as its natural beauty, Nara is known for the wild deer that often roam free around the city, making it a must for nature lovers. While it ranks third in terms of attraction ratings, an average meal in most restaurants in Nara will set you back just 2878 Yen!  

    Chiba: Chiba Prefecture

      In second place is Chiba, with a cost efficiency score of 8.9 out of ten. Chiba has the cheapest hotel and rail travel prices out of all cities in the top ten. The average hotel price in Chiba for two adults is just 11000 Yen, with a rail pass costing just 315 yen. Home to Japan’s two Disney parks, as well as Kujukuri Beach, Japan’s longest sandy coast-line, Chiba is perfect for both fun and relaxation. 

      Kumamoto: Kumamoto Prefecture

        At number 3 is Kumamoto, with a cost-efficiency rating of 8.3 out of ten. Kumamoto is perfect for exploring the beautiful natural landscape of Japan. It’s also one of the cheapest cities for rail travel, with a rail travel day pass costing just 500 yen. Kumamoto is home to Mount Aso, one of the world’s largest active volcanoes, and is known as ‘The Land of Fire’, making it an exciting and breathtaking city to explore. 

        Okinawa: Okinawa Prefecture

          In fourth place is Okinawa, the southernmost prefecture in Japan, with a rating of 8.0 out of ten. These islands are not only rather inexpensive to visit, but are also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Japan. The crystal clear waters makes it perfect for exploring the coral reefs and beautiful sea life that surround the islands. 

          Hiroshima: Hiroshima Prefecture

            Finally, at number 5 is Hiroshima, with a cost efficiency rating of 7.9 out of ten. Many of Hiroshima’s top attractions are either free or have low entrance fees; the Peace Memorial Park and Museum and Shukkeien Garden are some of the notable sites with minimal costs. 

            The city also offers a range of budget-friendly accommodations from hostels and budget hotels to capsule hotels. These options are typically more affordable compared to larger cities like Tokyo or Osaka.
