Can Liverpool win the quadruple?
Current Capital One Cup holders, Liverpool remains firmly in the race for three competitions. If they win, Liverpool will be making history as the first English side to win in the four major competitions within a season. A quadruple sweep of trophies.
Liverpool has a solid squad. Thanks to Klopp’s brilliance, the team has been rejuvenated to become a top contending team following their grey days where they struggled all around. With world stars in goal, defense, midfield, and attack departments, Liverpool is covering the spread easily, and now, they are one of the best teams in the world.
They defeated Chelsea via penalties to win the Capital One Cup on Sunday, 27th February, and are set to face Chelsea again for the FA cup final in May. Liverpool has a great chance of being into the Champions league finals after defeating Villarreal in the first leg of their semifinal clash at Anfield.
Liverpool are also at loggerheads with Manchester City in a crazy run-in for the Premier League title. Only one point separates both teams. With about four games left in the season, Premier League lovers are set for a brilliant climax to what has been a very challenging season.
Can Liverpool win all four trophies? Let’s discuss.
Will Liverpool make history?
Liverpool FC is a traditional English team with a lot of success trailing them. They currently have 19 League titles in their coffers, with the last one won in the 2019/2020 season after a 30-year wait.
6 UEFA Champions League trophies, with the last one being won against Tottenham Hotspurs at the Santiago Bernabeu in the 2018/2019 season. Liverpool also has a good record of domestic laurels, having won the FA Cup a record seven times and the League cup on nine occasions.
Since Klopp became Liverpool’s manager in 2015, the League cup won against Chelsea in February has been the club’s only domestic trophy won apart from the Premier League. This is one of the reasons why Klopp likes to deflect the question when asked about his team’s quadruple chances.
Winning a quadruple is very hard. Many people believe that it is a feat achievable only in manager games.
What are Liverpool’s chances of winning three more trophies this season? Let’s look at each competition and Liverpool’s chances.
Possible trophies for Liverpool
- Premier League
Liverpool are currently placed second in the English Premier League. They are one point behind last season’s champion Manchester City with five games left to play. Liverpool’s run into the end of the season looks tricky with games coming up against a defensively strong Newcastle side, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Southampton, and Wolves. Liverpool has to win all remaining five games and hopes that City slips at some point. For now, it is Manchester City’s league to lose.
- UEFA Champions League
Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over a relentless Villarreal side at Anfield in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semifinal clash has given them an edge going into the second leg. The Yellow Submarines will be playing at home for the second leg. They will be tempted to attack Liverpool to reduce the deficit and hopefully upturn the tie. This should give Liverpool enough advantage to seal victory and advance to the final, where they could face either Real Madrid or Manchester City.
- FA Cup
On 14th May, Liverpool will face Chelsea in the final of the FA Cup at Wembley. Many pundits have described the FA Cup final as Chelsea’s opportunity to get revenge after narrowly losing out to Liverpool on penalties at the League Cup final. The FA Cup final is Thomas Tuchel’s side’s final chance of winning a domestic trophy this season. They will not go down without a fight come 14th May.
Conclusion
Before now, only Manchester United and Manchester City have won a treble within a season. Manchester United won the UEFA Champions League, The Premier League, and the FA Cup in 1999, while Manchester City won the Premier League, The FA Cup, and the League Cup in the 2018/2019 season.
Liverpool has very good chances to complete a quadruple this season. Still, they have to rise above all challenges and hopefully keep their star players fit.
