Zack Wheeler’s Cy Young chances take a hit as Phillies get swept by Diamondbacks
Not even two weeks in the past the Philadelphia Phillies swept the rival New York Mets to maneuver into first place within the NL East. It was arguably the staff’s largest sequence win since they final made the postseason in 2011, and a possible springboard for the remainder of the season. As a substitute, it has been all downhill since.
Thursday afternoon the Phillies have been shut down by Madison Bumgarner and the final place Diamondbacks (ARI 6, PHI 2) to finish the three-game sweep at Chase Discipline. Philadelphia scored 4 runs in three video games in opposition to the worst pitching staff within the Nationwide League. They’re 2-7 since sweeping the Mets and are 4 video games behind the Braves within the NL East.
As a result of dropping Thursday’s recreation is not unhealthy sufficient, ace righty Zack Wheeler’s Cy Young chances took an enormous hit. Wheeler was charged with six runs in 6 2/3 innings, upping his ERA from 2.56 to 2.77 in a single afternoon. The sport unraveled within the five-run seventh inning, when Nick Ahmed and Josh VanMeter every had a two-run double. Bumgarner drove in a run as nicely.
Frustration is clearing starting to boil over to the Phillies. Wheeler barked at dwelling plate umpire Tom Hallion as he left the mound within the seventh, presumably over a missed name earlier within the inning. An 0-2 pitch to Christian Walker was known as a ball despite the fact that it gave the impression to be a strike. The at-bat continued and Walker ripped a leadoff double, and issues snowballed from there.
Following the Mets sequence, an easy (“easy”) schedule was a reason to believe the Phillies could make a run at the NL East title. Any staff can beat another staff on any given day on this league although, generally even on three straight days, just like the D-Backs simply swept the Phillies. Thursday was basically a should win with Wheeler on the mound. As a substitute, it was an embarrassing loss.
Thursday’s loss dropped the Phillies to 61-60 on the season. They start a three-game sequence with the Padres in San Diego on Friday.
