Yankees owner calls Aaron Judge ‘one of the faces of the franchise’ but says there are no renewal talks yet

Not long ago New York Yankees star Aaron Judge burst with a rookie record of 52 home runs in 2017. Judge is now out of free agency for a year, and if he has his way, he will spend the rest of his career with Yankees.

“Honestly, there’s no better place to play. There’s no other place where I really want to play, just based on how the fans have received me, how they have brought me here and seen me as a person. their own,” The judge said recently. “That would be my wish, my goal is to end my career as a Yankee, but you never know what those cards contain. If that’s up to me, it’s up to me. , I’ll be a Yankee for the next 10 years.”

On Wednesday, Yankees president Hal Steinbrenner called Judge “one of the faces of the franchise” and said he would be open to discussing a long-term contract with his main office, though Those conversations have yet to take place. Here’s what Steinbrenner said at its owners’ quarterly meetings (through New York PostKen Davidoff’s):

“Look, he’s a great Yankee. He’s one of the faces of the franchise,” Steinbrenner said of Judge. “He’s been a great, great leader in the club. That’s definitely something I’m willing to talk to (general manager Brian Cashman). But nothing has officially happened yet.”

For what it’s worth, spring training is often the season-long season in baseball. Teams deal with freelance and commercial markets from November to January, then focus on extensions in February and March. There are exceptions — Blue Jays just renewed José Berríos, for example – although it is not uncommon for renewal talks to begin earlier in the winter.

Judge turns 30 in April and will be 31 in year one of his free agency contract. George Springer signed a six-year, $150 million contract with the Blue Jays at the age of 31, and it seems like a reasonable standard for a Judge contract. Of course, another MVP-sized season in 2022 could boost Judge’s salary. On the other hand, another injury year could cost him money.

Last season, Judge was the author of the .287 / .373/.533 batting streak with 39 home runs in 148 games. England is 5th out of all players in the League of Americas slot with 6.0 WAR. Judges are not finalists for the AL MVP award, although he could end up in fourth place in the vote. One way or another, his next contract will be a hot topic in Yankeeland for the next 14 months.
