The final update for Xbox backwards compatibility comes as part of the company’s 20th anniversary celebration. Among the new additions are Ice skating 2, Dead or Alive Ultimate, and the entire Max Payne series. The full list of games, including the final additions, can be found at Xbox official website.

This final update also offers some quality of life improvements. Series X Owners | S will be able to enjoy auto HDR with a supported display on any backwards compatible games. Original Xbox games are upscaled and Increase FPS was added to eleven other games, including FEAR 3, Binary Domains, and Nier.

Okay, these additions aren’t the biggest news here. Towards the end of the announcement post, the Xbox team notes this update is the “latest and final addition” of titles to the program for backward compatibility. In other words, there seem to be no plans to add more games. Going forward, the list of available games will be the entire list. In other words, if you want to go back and play games that aren’t on the list, you’ll have to play them on the original hardware.

It’s disappointing to hear that the program’s backwards compatibility is coming to an end. Yes, it seems to have done its job perfectly. Backward compatibility remains a major selling point for the Xbox brand. Just a little sad to see it end – especially since players will likely fall in love with it all over again in just a few console generations.
