Xbox November Update Adds More Accessibility Options

Microsoft is adding a bunch of new accessibility options for Xbox users in the latest update, including color filters, sound settings, etc.

November update for Xbox launched and provides a number of accessibility improvements for Xbox Series X/S. In addition to accessibility improvements for both Xbox console, there are a number of other updates, ranging from a controller firmware update, an update to the Xbox mobile app, and an updated layout for Xbox Game Pass.

Regarding accessibility options, Xbox Series X/S will have new and improved color filters to help players with color blindness or lack of color vision. Both Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S will also get the volume and sound settings updated. Rounding out accessibility updates is the addition of accessibility feature cards in the Microsoft Store.

As mentioned before, improved color filters designed to help colorblind players or those with color blindness. Color filters will allow players to customize their visual experience and help distinguish between colors that may look similar. The example given in the blog is that modifying the appearance of red or green tones would make those colors more distinguishable to players with red-green color blindness.

There are some new options in the volume and sound settings for both Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Additional options like “Mute speaker sound when headset is attached”, “allow pass-through” and ” mono output” is now available. The sound menu in Settings has also been overhauled to make finding related settings much easier.

Rounding out the accessibility updates is the addition of new highlight tags. Developers can now “tag” their games with up to 20 popular accessibility features used by Disability community & games. This will make it easier for players to find content that matches their needs and learn about accessibility options before making a purchase. Cards can include things like adjustable difficulty, color options, input remapping, and custom volume controls. As of the time of this writing, more than 325 games will have accessibility data published. In the coming months, there will also be an option to sort and filter tags.

A new firmware update is rolling out for Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller and Xbox Adaptive Controller. These features were previously available on Xbox Series X/S controllers and fall into two categories. The first is better connectivity between multiple devices through the use of Bluetooth Low Energy. This will allow players to pair their controller with multiple devices and swap between them by double tapping the Pair button. The second improvement is latency reduction through Dynamic Delay Import. This will provide more efficient controller input to the Xbox console.

Finally, the Xbox mobile app will get new features. Link sharing is “coming soon” and will allow players to quickly create links to their captured videos and screenshots to allow them to be shared online. Another inbound feature will be the ability to view the most trending content from Xbox gamers, allowing players to view, like, comment on, and share other players’ gaming posts. Last but not least, Xbox Game Pass is getting a new design to help users find the plan that works best for them.
