Xbox Head Phil Spencer on Console Wars

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer weighs in on the console wars following Xbox’s 20th anniversary and offers a fresh take on the matter.
Top Xbox Phil Spencer once again gave his opinion on the topic of console wars in an interview with Edge Magazine. Last year Spencer spoke out specifically on this issue and stated that Xbox don’t see the PlayStation as the enemy.
Spencer’s comment isn’t as interesting as it was not long ago Xbox praise The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, exclusive to Nintendo, on Twitter. The company responded to a reply on the original Tweet asking users “What’s a game that makes you feel at home?” with a user stating Breath of the Wild. Xbox in turn responded by praising the game itself with the comment “BotW offers such a relaxing sandbox experience (with occasional deadly lasers)”. This has earned it significant marks in the eyes of many gamers.
Spencer’s comments this time looked at the toxicity associated with console wars and how gamers and companies should instead focus on growing the industry as a whole rather than trying to try to segment it. Spencer stated that Xbox is not focused on how to make other platforms smaller, but instead wants the gaming industry as a whole to grow with Xbox. The company seems to fully agree with this statement because Halo Infinite available on Steam upon release when previously this series was exclusively for the green team.
Xbox isn’t the only company promoting industry positivity like last month PlayStation congratulates Xbox on its 20th anniversary. This positive trend is also good for gamers as hopefully it can lead to more dialogue regarding cross-play, which is another point Spencer made. He said that Xbox likes to focus on cross-play and save cross-play so gamers can play against each other regardless of the console they decide to buy.
While it’s great to see industry competitors engage in some healthy backlash, in the end both PlayStation and Xbox are companies and their goal is to make a profit. Here’s why PlayStation is trying to take the Xbox’s pie away by planning its own competitor to compete with Xbox Game Pass. The move could also be especially good for consumers as competition can drive prices down on both services. It’s also hard to blame PlayStation for wanting to capitalize on the sheer amount of success Xbox Game Pass has had so far.
