In 2016, Xbox confirmed that at one point it plans to make an “Xboy”, a handheld device Xbox device to compete with Nintendo’s 3DS and PlayStation’s PS Vita. However, Microsoft was never able to allocate the necessary resources to the Xbox to create a genuine product. There have been no rumors about an Xbox handheld since, but a new impetus for Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Game Pass is reviving discussion among fans. However, that’s not all, as a recent exciting hardware announcement also made fans think of an Xboy.

In a recent announcement, Razer and Qualcomm are teaming up to deliver a unique handset. A development kit of the device was even revealed, dubbed the Snapdragon G3x Handset Development Kit. This is the first device that Qualcomm calls the Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 gaming platform. While Qualcomm describes the device as an Android gaming platform, it also says the device can provide a PC-like experience. or consoles – notably Xbox Cloud Gaming.

The Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 gaming platform has strong support for many key features. That includes support for up to 144 FPS, 4K HDR HDMI output, 5G, stereo sound, etc. The stereo touch is a surprising addition, especially since Xbox recently confirmed that over 20% Xbox Cloud Gaming the player controls the user’s touch. Imagine a Nintendo Switch that supports Xbox Cloud Gaming with touch controls, but in an Android device.

Qualcomm's Android Handset

Even the first developer kit shown, Razer’s emulator, looks like an Xbox handheld. It has controller features and functions split between the two sides of the screen. The joysticks as well as X / Y / A / BUTTONS configured similarly to the Xbox controller. If this has the Xbox operating system running on it, it will convincingly be an Xbox handheld console.

To be clear, Xbox is not affiliated with Qualcomm’s Gaming Platform or Razer device. There’s no reason to believe Xbox is considering a handheld at this point or that Qualcomm would be their partner if they do. This shows that Qualcomm is looking to use its mobile experience to break into the handheld game console market.

That said, if Xbox wants to get into the handheld market, a product from Qualcomm and Razer is definitely a path the company could take. In fact, it’s like a Qualcomm offering. Instead of the expensive Steam Deck running games from the device, Xbox could offer something like a Switch entirely dedicated to game streaming via Xbox Cloud Gaming. At this point, one Xbox Handset feels more like a necessity than a possibility.
