In an unusual location, an unusual and possibly unpopular opinion was revealed: Payer is the best Final Fantasy position. A fan in the stands proudly holds up a sign at Smackdown, a missing location Square Enix connection.

Almost nothing is known about this random waiter, save for their love of a game that isn’t even in the game. NS Final Fantasy series. Is the sign simply an attempt by a troll? Or was it a misguided attempt by a confused fan to promote a game that is over 20 years old?

The revelation comes from a Reddit post made by u/BananaBoi7668 on r/FinalFosystem. Comments were filled with people loving and nostalgic about the title and others criticizing it for its short length and character design.

VIDEO GAME OF THE DAY

Payer was released in 2001 for the PlayStation 2. It was directed by Takashi Tokita and Seiichi Ishii with character designs by Tetsuya Nomura. The story follows three jumpers who work at a dangerous Dog Street bar in Edge City. They each come from a different path in life but all find their way to the same place, and with a mysterious girl in charge of them. Life is good until she is kidnapped by the mysterious and powerful Mikado company. They venture to rescue the girl and discover why.

Despite having a stunning image from time to time and being a launch title for PlayStation 2, Payer received lackluster reviews from critics as well as fans. Many criticized its short length and repetitive combat. Compounding the problem is the uneven balance between the cutscenes compared to the actual game. Watching a turn shows that actual play takes up only about a third of a turn. While the reviews weren’t bad, they weren’t great either, and that combined with poor sales resulted in the series going nowhere.

The most confusing part of all of this is Payer not part of Final Fantasy The universe. Yes, it shared the same developer, Squaresoft at the time, and there were teases about that series, but that’s it. Even if the statement is to criticize Final Fantasy franchise, go with another Squaresoft game that really has Final Fantasy characters in it will make more sense. Ehrgeiz is a lesser known fighting game from Squaresoft that actually has character from Final Fantasy 7 Inside. That would at least be suitable for a non-technical game Final Fantasy better Final Fantasy.

Second, to make such a request at an event like Smackdown, has no real connection to Payer or Final Fantasy incredible. So unless this random fan makes a post of their own, or someone follows them for answers, there’s no way to know the true meaning behind the sign.

Payer available for PlayStation 2.
