Ask anyone to name an MMO, and there’s a good chance World of Warcraft would be the first example that comes to mind. The quintessential game of the genre, World of Warcraft has been an MMO platform for over a decade now. Unfortunately, it also suffered a bit of a decline towards the end of the year, partly due to content and story decisions, and partly due to Activision Blizzard’s Controversies.

While it’s not a great time to be a World of Warcraft fan, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Microsoft is buying Activision Blizzard and includes World of Warcraft with it. Although it is still unconfirmed, it is most likely World of Warcraft may come to Xbox Game Pass due to the way Microsoft typically handles first-party games.

The changes aren’t always well received in the video game community, but Microsoft’s intervention may be just the what World of Warcraft demand, possibly even saving what could be considered a dying player base. Microsoft has a solid track record of giving creative autonomy to its studios, and while many have the foresight behind World of Warcraft no longer on set, a simple approach that makes World of Warcraft directly into the hands of Blizzard developers able to get the story and gameplay changes back on track.

For now, the best path for fans to take is cautious optimism. Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard won’t end until next year, and after that there will likely still be a transition period for the studio.
