wow umpire eternal darkness is over

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is in beta testing the final main story content of the expansion, called Eternity’s End. Among the stories that end in it, Eternity’s End will eventually see the Referee seat filled again – and it looks like World of Warcraft is to avoid falling into harmful prejudices with one’s sudden choice. Warning: Spoilers for Shadowlands: Eternity’s End below.

In Shadowlands, the player discovers that the Arbiter, a construction responsible for sorting souls into their proper lives, has been destroyed by scheming of Shadowlands countervailing, Zovaal the Jailer. Transparent Eternity’s End, Pelagos, a fledgling kyrian the player encounters throughout the story, will voluntarily accept the Referee’s cloak and assume her duties.

Cut-scenes data from Eternity’s End shows Pelagos embracing this new destiny as Arbitrator. In the process, he received a literal glow – a mixture of his former form and the large and elegant umpire. In the cutscenes, he appears to have kept his personality intact, as joking with Kleia and with the player character.

A few weeks ago, World of Warcraft fans have identified the dialogue data used in this dialogue, which first hints at this development. As Pelagos is one of World of Warcraft’s first conversion character, many players were interested Warcraft will force him to “transform” by having him assume the female coded form the old Arbiter used, or will remove his personality in the process, functionally killing him by additional steps. Sound World of Warcraft avoided both of these problematic tropes commonly used with LGBTQ+ characters, as Pelagos not only kept his masculine figure but also his personality and personality.

Despite mixed reception of the course of this story, many Warcraft fans who are members of the LGBTQ community + satisfied with this development. Having a transgender character not only attract attention in such a way, but essentially become a grim reaper, is not something people usually see.

Others are not satisfied with this beat story. Although all players encounter Pelagos in Shadowlands story, only players who choose Kyrian coven know him, or even find out he’s transgender in the first place. Many assumed that the choice was out of the left field and that other characters, such as Sylvanas, Uther or Anduin would make a better choice for the next Arbiter. However, it is unlikely that any of these choices will be better received, especially since warm reception to Shadowlands since its launch last year. Pelagos’ fate as the New Referee may be the best players can hope for, but they can draw their own conclusions as the story is finalized in Eternity’s End.
