With ‘Licorice Pizza’, Paul Thomas Anderson is back in his childhood San Fernando Valley

Filming close to home during the pandemic, with a cast and crew made up of friends of Anderson, is physically realistic. However, by revisiting the area where he has filmed such works as “Boogie Nights,” “Magnolia” and “Punch-Drunk Love,” the writer-director says he also finds inspiration: The farmlands previously cited in “Chinatown” still present 51-year-old Anderson, a terrorist filled with recollections, lore, and spooky narrative themes. Where some might consider Valley communities like his hometown Studio City to be “the most suburban of suburban neighborhoods,” Anderson considers the foundations for high drama.
