Wimbledon: Sloane Stephens and Frances Tiafoe cause upsets

Stephens stunned two-time champion Petra Kvitova in straight sets, 6-3 6-4, while Tiafoe beat world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas, 6-4 6-4 6-3.

About 6,000 people were on Court One to watch the uncovered Tiafoe dominate Tsitsipas, who has now bowed to the Wimbledon opening round in three of the last four attempts.

Meanwhile, Tiafoe has only progressed to the third round at SW19 before but has reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open 2019.

“Definitely one of my best [matches]. From start to finish, it was pretty clean,” Tiafoe, 23, said after the win.

“This is what you train, this is all it is. I live for moments like this.”

‘Very special’

Meanwhile, Stephens had an impressive performance to knock out Kvitova.

The 28-year-old, who won the US Open in 2017, never made it past the quarterfinals at the All England Club but showed a lot of promise against the Czech No. 10 seed, in her first match. playing on grass since 2019.

“It’s special, obviously not playing on grass for two years and then being able to come back, and my first game on grass was on Center pitch with the fans coming back really just a dream. dream,” Stephens said after the game.

World No 3 Simona Halep is the latest to disqualify herself after saying she needs more time to recover from a calf injury.

She joins a growing list of absentees, which includes the likes of Rafa Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Serena Williams.

“Nothing brings me more pride than representing Romania, but sadly my recovery from a calf injury takes time and I have made the decision to withdraw from the Summer Olympics. hey,” Halep wrote on Twitter.

“After the disappointment of missing out on the French Open and Wimbledon, having to skip the Olympics was incredibly difficult to digest, but I’m determined to come back stronger.”
