Will the X-Men ’97 become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
On November 12, Disney Plus announced new information about several upcoming projects, including several upcoming TV series produced by Marvel Studios. Most of these shows are live action TV series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Ms. Marvel, She is heavy, and Moonlight Knight, among others – but also a surprise announcement that surprised countless fans.
One of the newly announced shows is none other than X-Men ’97, an animated series due out in 2023 will be the first Marvel Studios project to feature the legendary team of mutant superheroes. However, as the name suggests, the show will not focus on the modern incarnation of the X-Men. Instead, the series will serve as a direct sequel to another X-Men show close and dear to the hearts of fans.
Follow Official announcement posted on Marvel.com, X-Men ’97 “Discover new stories in the iconic ’90s timeline of the original series.” Of course, the series was originally mentioned as X-Men: Animated Series, the first animated film to focus on Marvel’s mighty mutants. The show ran on the Fox Kids channel from 1992 to 1997, spanning five seasons with a total of 65 episodes. And true to its name, X-Men ’97 will start right where its predecessor stopped.
X-Men: The Animated Series heartily remembered by fans to this day, and for good reason – long before the days of the MCU, X-Men: TAS is the first true Marvel film adaptation that has managed to really capture the full spirit of the source material, adapting iconic storylines like “Days of Future Past.” and “The Dark Phoenix Saga” to animation. And while it might seem cheesy and outdated to modern viewers, it’s still a ground-breaking show in many ways. Not only was this one of the first cartoons to attempt to tell a long story and heavy on continuity, it also incorporated many of the more mature themes of the comics in a way that children could still understand. Okay. Anti-mutant bias, Wolverine’s tragic past, Magneto’s moral ambiguity, and even Nightcrawler’s Christian faith are all explored with the same pull they have in the comics. The series’ two-part premiere, “Night of the Sentinels,” even kills off an X-Man named Morph, which from the start insists this is no ordinary cartoon.
It’s also indisputable high score of X-Men: TAS without mentioning the voice cast. Even with all the confusing dialogue and setting, they brought enough charm and heart to roles that their performances remain iconic to this day. Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Catherine Disher as Jean Grey, Chris Potter as Gambit, Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler and Christopher Britton as Mister Sinister all brought their characters to life – so it’s no surprise that they’ve all been confirmed to return in the revival (though not all of them reprise their original roles. them), now featuring great voice actors like Jennifer Hale, Jeff Bennett, and Ray Chase.
Of course, with X-Men ’97 present produced by Marvel Studios itself, the question is obvious: will this new series be connected to the MCU? Needless to say, the original X-Men: TAS doesn’t fit very well with the MCU as we know it – not only does it have Captain America and Carol Danvers (still carrying her Ms. Marvel identity) as main guest stars, but it also includes guest roles. Brief invites from Thor, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Ghost Rider, among others. And of course, this mutant’s incarnation also surpassed the city Spider-Man: Animated Series on many occasions. So yes, even ignoring the fact that it predates the MCU by 16 years, there’s plenty of evidence to back that up. X-Men: TAS very clearly not taking place in the same universe as the MCU movies.
However, that does not mean there will be no connection anything between X-Men ’97 and MCUs. After all, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is no longer just one universe, but an entire multiverse. The MCU’s Phase 4 has focused on traveling between alternate timelines, with Loki and Spider-Man: There’s no way home just focused on the concept. And of course, the premise of What if…? based on the exploration of other universes, with familiar characters placed in unfamiliar situations.
With this in mind, it’s not too far-fetched X-Men ’97 will connect the continuity of the classic animated series with the broader multiverse of the MCU. After all, the original series is no stranger to adventures beyond time, thanks to stories like “The Runners Through Time”, “A Man’s Value” and of course “The Day of the Dead”. of the Past Future”. It can hardly be out of the realm of possibility X-Men ’97 can feature guest from another universe more closely resemble their MCU counterparts. The X-Men of the ’90s are even likely to appear in the future What if…? season for a suitable crossover. The possibilities are endless.
But of course, that’s purely speculation. Very little is known about X-Men ’97 currently aside from the cast and crew – and even then, the true roles of the aforementioned cast have yet to be revealed. With the show not set to be released until 2023, it could be a while until more information is revealed.
However, that didn’t stop fans from going crazy X-Men ’97. Even after nearly 30 years, it’s still one of the most beloved Marvel movie adaptations ever, and a stark depiction of X-Men mythology. It is not surprising that the potential of This popular cartoon series Crossing the larger MCU multiverse is an exciting prospect. But for now, Marvel Studios’ revival of these classic mutant adventures is still far off.
