Will Smith’s shorts in ‘King Richard’ deserve an Oscar

There is so much to talk about King Richard, the new biopic in theaters and on HBO Max on Friday.

We can talk about tennis champion Venus and Serena Williams‘incredible journey from the streets of Compton, CA to the courts of Wimbledon. We can discuss whether the movie will allow their father, Richard Williams, to get away with some of the controversial training (and parenting methods). Or we can talk about the star and the producer Will SmithA promising Oscar for a performance that left critics raving. But personally I just want to talk about one thing: the short shorts that Smith usually wears for most of the movie.

As Richard Williams – the outspoken, confrontational father and coach of Venus and Serena – Smith transforms into an old, weathered man from the deep south, speaking in a charismatic Louisiana dialect. He was a man with a plan to move his family out of Compton, California — an 84-page plan that involved training his daughters to play tennis starting at age 4. In the movie, we see Richard driving his daughters. —Played by young actors Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton — goes to the tennis court day in and day out. And he is always, always wearing the smallest shorts you’ll ever see Will Smith wear. And it’s interesting.

I mean, just look at that stuff. They are too short! An inch shorter than the shorts his teenage daughter was wearing! If I wore those shorts in high school, I would almost certainly be sent home to change.

And when I say that Smith wears shorts for most of the movie, I assure you I’m not exaggerating. It’s not just about wearing “normal tennis training with his daughters on local courts”. Apparently this is also what his character wears to meet two big wigs who want to give him a lot of money. Would Smith wear shorts like that to business meetings because of feminism or patriarchy? I’m not sure, but I like it. And you know what? The fact that he wears shorts with boots makes it all the more iconic when Smith tells those clothes where they can stuff it.

Smith is not the only one to create a short-term view in King Richard. His co-stars Jon Bernthal and Tony Goldwyn, who play real-life tennis coaches Rick Macci and Paul Cohen respectively, also love this early ’90s tracksuit. I’m not saying costume director Sharen Davis deserves an Oscar just for his shorts, but neither am I Not say. At least, King Richard shorts deserve an MTV Movie Award.

However, just as the Eiffel Tower must always be the tallest building in Paris, Will Smith’s shorts must always be the shortest in any scene. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was written into his contract. This is his movie, after all. He came for that Oscar! He need for the smallest shorts!

Maybe Smith’s shorts add to that King Richardsense of realism. Maybe Richard Williams really did wear a tiny pair of shorts everywhere he went. I haven’t done any research on this, and I don’t intend to. I just want to enjoy the view of Smith’s impressive, muscular thighs in a pair of pale red gym shorts. Men: What’s stopping you from dressing like this?
