Will Overwatch become an Xbox exclusive?
Following the announcement that Microsoft is buying Activision Blizzard, many gamers are wondering how the transaction could affect the games they know and love, including Overwatch.
Since it was released in 2016, Overwatch was playable on multiple platforms, including PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Nearly all high-level esports competitions for games are played with PC as the platform of choice. This includes Overwatch League, which serves as the professional league of the game.
With Microsoft’s Xbox IP as one of its flagship products, the company sometimes has games created exclusively for Xbox. This led some to question whether that could happen with some of Activision Blizzard’s titles once the acquisition closes, which is expected to happen before the end of fiscal year 2023.
Microsoft hasn’t made any official statements about specific games becoming Xbox exclusives, but the possibility Overwatch being an Xbox exclusive is extremely low considering how popular the game is among PC gamers.
In one Official statement released this morning, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer did not directly say whether any games would or could become Xbox exclusives. But he also hinted that Microsoft has no intention of removing any titles from the platforms they currently use.
“Activision Blizzard games are enjoyed on a variety of platforms, and we plan to continue supporting those communities in the future,” Spencer said.
See as Overwatch community is largely PC gamers and its major pro league is played on PC, it’s not highly likely that Microsoft would think of making it an Xbox exclusive as doing so would certainly not be things to “support” Overwatch community as it is today.
This article will be updated with any details released by Microsoft or Activision Blizzard.
