Who wins shall be decided largely by one other contest, inside the Taliban. Though the group is headed by a supreme chief, Habitullah Akhundzada, it’s not a monolith. Qatar is aligned with the political faction led by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, whereas Pakistan is backing the army wing, marshalled by the likes of Mohammad Yaqoob, the son of former supreme chief, Mullah Omar, and Sirajuddin Haqqani, head of the dreaded Haqqani Community, designated a terrorist group by the U.S.
