“Who the fuck cares about Adam McKay?” (We do and with good reason)

McKay and Ferrell discussed breaking up with Gary Sanchez Productions at least three times, often at Ferrell’s suggestion. And there were some participants who said, ‘We love Ferrell, he’s a genius, but we couldn’t see him do it.’ It was a somewhat difficult discussion.”

The person McKay wanted for Buss was John C. Reilly, the more realistic looking man and Ferrell’s best friend. McKay hesitated. “Didn’t want to hurt his feelings,” he said bluntly. “Want to be respected.”

In the end, he still reprized Reilly in the role – without telling Ferrell first. Ferrell was furious. “I should have called him, but I didn’t,” McKay said. “And of course Reilly did, because Reilly, he’s a stand-up guy.”

In 2019, Ferrell and McKay released a joint statement announcing their separation, saying, “The two of us will always work together creatively and remain friends. And we realize how lucky we are to have ended this venture like that.” But it is not true. The last time they spoke was a curt phone call agreeing to break up. “I said, ‘I mean, we’re splitting the company,’ McKay recalls. “And he basically said, ‘That’s right,’ and he was basically, ‘Have a good life.’ And I said, ‘Fuck, Ferrell will never talk to me again.’ So it didn’t end well.”

Then the Lakers gig moved on to McKay’s new production banner, Hyperobject Industries. (Ferrell declined to comment for this story.)

Back at McKay’s house, he pointed to a Step brother posters in his living room and show me his bathroom are lined with pictures and posters from Anchorman and other Ferrell products. McKay said that he emailed Ferrell, trying to rebuild, but never received a response. McKay lamented: “I’m sad about the way that was handled. “Keeping the streets clean is the old thing. I should have just done everything according to the book.”

“In my head, I thought, ‘We’re going to let this end. Six months to a year, we’ll sit down, we’ll laugh about it and go, It’s all a trifle, who gives an asshole? We have worked together for 25 years. Do we really want to let this go? “” But Ferrell, he continued, “sees it as a deeper hurt than I ever imagined and I tried to reach out to him, and I reminded him of some of his gentle actions.
