Who is the Nivellen monster in ‘The Witcher’ season 2?

Netflix season 2 premiere The Witcher features a monster unlike anything we’ve seen in the live-action adaptation. But what’s the story behind? Nivellen and how does it compare to the source document?

As many of you know, Geralt’s story in the book begins with two collections of short stories depicting his exploits across the Northern Kingdoms – one of which is called Last Wish. In one of these short stories, titled “A Grain of Truth,” the White Wolf stumbles upon a cursed mansion where there is a humanoid monster, but a monster worthy of intelligence. more surprising than our usual monster hunters.

Because “A grain of truth” is basically the story surrounding it Last Wish , a lot of fans were disappointed to see the first part removed completely. But it looks like the screenwriters at Netflix had bigger plans from the start to tie Nivellen’s story into the larger story, and it worked great as a prelude to season 2.

In the book, the story of Nivellen begins when Geralt decides to take a shortcut through a valley but encounters the corpses of a merchant and his wife. As he investigates the matter further, he is dashed by a giant monster who tries to frighten him. The Witcher, being himself, stands his ground, then the monster decides to invite him to his mansion.

Geralt and Nivellen talk over dinner, and then explain why he has spent the past 12 years as a cursed monster. In the show, Nivellen said he was cursed because he raided the temple of the Lionhead Spider and raped its priestess, while in Last Wish The beast claims to have been coerced to do so by his bandit comrades.

Nivellen further deduces that his story is a classic fairy tale where the monster can be turned back into a human by the kiss of true love. He then recounts the history of many women who came to live with him, though none of them affected the curse, and neither did they. During dinner, and like the source material, Geralt repeatedly asked Nivellen if they were alone in the house, and the cursed man repeatedly dodged the question, unwilling to talk about the other guest. which he entertains.

Geralt eventually deduces that the current girl, Vereena, is actually a Bruxa responsible for killing the merchant and his wife. He returned the next day and faced the real monster, and a bloody fight ensued.

While Cavill’s live-action version makes Bruxa’s job easy, the book Geralt struggles to keep up with the vampire, who moves with astonishing speed and grace. Only with Nivellen’s timely intervention was Geralt able to breathe. The monster turned to the cursed man, deciding that if she died, so did her lover. The White Wolf used this distraction and killed Vereena, but not before she was able to express her feelings to Nivellen, which broke the curse.

What becomes of Nivellen, the charismatic and tragic monster of The Witcher saga, no one knows, because the character does not appear in the story again. But since the Netflix series also leaves his fate uncertain, we have a feeling that Kristofer Hivju’s Nivellen might return in future seasons of the show.
