The presenter will appear on Who Do You Think You Are and explore his Jewish roots
The BBC family history show Who Do You Think You Are? digs into the family history of prominent guests and often finds surprising historical connections.
In the next episode of the current season, host and comedian Matt Lucas takes a look into his own family’s past.
Other celebrity guests who have appeared on the show’s 19th season include host Richard Osman and comedian Sue Perkins.
Matt Lucas will trace his ancestry back to World War II and find connections to Nazi Germany and occupied Holland.
Who is Matt Lucas?
Sue Perkins, 48, is a comedian and presenter who attended the prestigious Haberdashers Boys School in Herefordshire before studying drama at Bristol University.
It was in Bristol that Matt met his future collaborator, David Walliams.
His early work in TV comedy was alongside Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer – appearing with them in Shooting Stars, Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) and Catterick.
One of his first collaborations with Walliams was on Rock Profile, a spoof music interview show.
The couple also worked together on the comedy sketch show Little Britain, a show the couple is still synonymous with.
He played a variety of now-iconic roles in Little Britain, including homophobic gay man Daffyd Thomas, inept Fat Fighters leader Marjorie Dawes and stereotypical Chav Vicky Pollard.
Matt and David worked together again on Come Fly With Me, a mockumentary set in an airport.
In 2016 he played Tweedledee and Tweedledum in Tim Burton’s fantasy sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass and joined the cast of Doctor Who as Nardol, a companion to the 12th Doctor.
In 2020, Matt Lucas joined The Great British Bake Off as presenter, succeeding Sandi Toksvig.
Is Matt Lucas friends with Rebel Wilson?
Matt co-starred with Wilson in the 2011 comedy Bridesmaids, in which the couple played roommates.
They later became roommates in real life and lived together in an apartment in Los Angeles for three years.
When Wilson accused the Sunday Morning Herald of pressuring her to come out and disclose her relationship with designer Ramona Agruma, Matt came to her defense.
He tweeted: “Coming out is often a long, frightening process with many beats. Self-realization, telling friends & family, a first relationship.
“I thought that the press that forces people to come out whether they are ready or not is a thing of the past. I must have been wrong.”
Why did Matt Lucas and David Walliams fight?
Matt and David stopped working together for eight years starting in 2011 after Come Fly With Me ended.
They had reportedly had several big arguments during their Little Britain Live tour in 2005 and 2007.
The pair also attacked each other in their autobiographies, and it seemed like they would never reconcile.
However, in 2019 the pair worked together to record Little Brexit for Radio 4.
It seems they are on good terms again and reportedly worked together on a new TV project last year.
Is Mat Lucas married?
Matt entered into a civil partnership with TV presenter Kevin McGee in December 2006, but they dissolved in 2008.
McGee killed himself in 2009 and Matt posted a tribute to his former husband on the tenth anniversary of his death.
Matt has not been married since and is currently believed to be single.
What does Matt Lucas find out about Who Do You Think You Are?
Matt learns about the life of his grandmother, who was Jewish in Nazi Germany in the 1930s and came to Britain as a refugee in 1939, and the fate of her family who stayed behind.
Some of his grandmother’s family fled Germany for the safety of the Netherlands, only to find themselves threatened again when the Nazis invaded the country at the start of World War II.
His family history is traced from Berlin to Amsterdam, where he uncovers an unexpected connection to Anne Frank.
When is Matt Lucas on Who Do You Think You Are?
The next episode of Who Do You Think You Are? will be broadcast on BBC One on 16 June at 9pm.
It will be available on BBC iPlayer shortly after it first airs, along with previous episodes of the show.
