The Norse saga about a Viking prince starring Alexander Skarsgård and Nicole Kidman
The Northman tells the story of a 10th-century Viking prince who seeks avenge for his father’s death.
Many fans set in Iceland would be surprised to learn that the scenes were actually filmed in Northern Ireland and Ireland.
Here’s everything you need to know about The Northman filming locations.
What is the Northman?
Set in 10th-century Iceland, The Northman is loosely inspired by the Old Norse story of Prince Amleth, written by the scholar Saxo Grammaticus in the early 13th century
The story follows Prince Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) who must save his mother (Nicole Kidman) and murder his uncle (Claes Bang) for killing his father (Ethan Hawke).
The story was said to be the inspiration for William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
Where was The Northman filmed?
Although the Norse saga is set in Iceland, most scenes in The Northman were filmed in Northern Ireland and Ireland.
Filming was originally scheduled to take place in Iceland in March 2020, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the team moved most of the filming locations closer to home.
Speaking to the i, location manager Naomi Lister said: “Everyone will think it was filmed in Iceland because it looks so good, but almost every scene was filmed in Northern Ireland.”
The filming locations of the Northman
Here are some of The Northman’s filming locations:
Torr Head, situated between the towns of Ballycastle and Cushendun, is the setting for the fictional town of Hrafnsey.
Clandeboye Estate, County Down
The Clandeboye Estate, located outside of Bangor, County Down, is the location of the Hrafnsey Temple and the set for the Slavic town they sack.
Morne Mountains, County Down
Prince Amleth is playing a Viking ball game in the Morne Mountains.
Located outside the city of Newcastle, they are Northern Ireland’s highest mountain range.
Tyrella Beach, County Down
The scene at the end of the film was filmed at Tyrella Beach in County Down.
Known by locals as one of the best beaches in the area, this is where Amleth sets sail.
Belfast Harbor Studios, Belfast
Scenes that could not be filmed on location in Northern Ireland or Ireland were filmed at Belfast Harbor Studios in the city’s Titanic Quarter.
Gleniff Horseshoe, County Sligo
The hot springs scene was filmed at Gleniff Horseshoe in County Sligo.
Unfortunately there are no hot springs in Ireland so the spring in question was a hot tub built by the crew.
Five Fingers Beach, County Donegal
The scene of Prince Amleth swimming away from the slave ship was filmed at Five Fingers Beach in Donegal.
The beach is a popular spot for tourists and is known for its high sand dunes.
Iceland features in the film’s main photography, with the production using photographs of Akureyri and the glaciers in Vatnajökull National Park.
When was The Northman released?
The Northman arrived in UK cinemas on April 15 to rave reviews.
The film currently has a respectable 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, who describe it as: “A bloody revenge epic and a stunning visual marvel. The Northman finds filmmaker Robert Eggers expanding his latitude without sacrificing his signature style.”
