Amazon’s adaptation of Robert Jordan’s high-profile fantasy epic, Wheel of Time began streaming this weekend, and while the series features a host of stellar acting talent, many are commenting on the groundbreaking appeal of its stunning shooting locations. So what are the locations that make this sword and this magical story alive?
Amazon’s producers have certainly borrowed a page or two from HBO’s blockbuster Game of Thrones, choosing to film primarily in Eastern Europe. Much as Thrones‘Westeros, Action of Wheel of the Time set in a completely fictitious World of Wheels. Manufacturers used locations in the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Croatia.
To build the fictional town of Two Rivers, the producers set up a shop in a quarry outside Prague, Czech Republic. The team also built a brand new studio, appropriately named Jordan Studios, for interior filming. Additional scenes were filmed in the ruins of Dolský mlýn.
To shoot the scenes that took place in the mountains of World of the Wheel, the producers chose the town of Bovec in Slovenia for its beautiful mountain views. The village of Soca also stands out.
Finally, the town of Dubrovnik, in Croatia, has been recognized by Game of Thrones fans as the setting for Kings Landing, used to recreate the beauty of an older, more populous city.
Fans of the series can expect other settings as well, as each of the Dragon Reborn contenders traverses their own specific regions of the World. The works have been set in the Canary Islands and Italy along with its current Eastern European setting.
