Children don’t have an extended break for the May half-year like in other regions of the country – but they do take a break for their seven-week summer holiday break in early July.

Most students have a day off after May Day at the beginning of the month and then a day or two off later in the month for Spring Day.

This year, however, due to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, most schools will close on Friday 3 June instead.

This is the extra bank holiday granted by the UK government to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s 70th reign.

However, schools have the discretion to run a series of staff training and school development days.

The students then have an eight-week summer break between the beginning of July and the beginning of September.

What is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee?

The Platinum Jubilee marks the 70th year of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne.

Her Majesty achieved this feat on February 6th this year, but she didn’t want to celebrate that day as it is also the anniversary of her father’s death.

As with Queen’s previous anniversaries, celebrations are planned for June – a time when it is hoped that the weather gets better too.
