When are the Bafta TV Awards 2022, who are the nominees – and how to watch

The Bafta TV Awards honor the best British and international TV shows of the past 12 months

The past 12 months have seen some great TV shows broadcast in the UK and internationally across multiple platforms and across genres.

The Bafta TV Awards recognize excellence in the field of television, including scripted and unscripted programming, including soap operas and comedies, news programmes, documentaries, sports and more.

This year, the Bafta TV awards turn 67 years old, and for decades they have been presented at the same time as the Bafta Film awards in a joint ceremony, but since 1998, the events have been separated.

There are 27 award categories this year

At the Bafta Film Awards this March, the sci-fi epic Dune took home the most awards with five, but the New West’s The Power of the Dog took home two of the top awards, wins for best picture and best director.

George Ezra will perform on the red carpet of the Bafta TV Awards as the best and the best from the world of television arrive for the ceremony.

When are the Bafta TV Awards held?

The Virgin Media Bafta TV Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 8.

The ceremony will be televised live on BBC One and will also be broadcast live on BBC iPlayer.

Who are the nominees?

This year’s list of nominees is full of stars, including Kate Winslet, Olly Alexander, Stephen Graham, Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse.

Some of the shows in the coveted Bafta run include the prison drama Time, the Aids crisis skit It’s Sin, the reality TV show Gogglebox, the comedy show The Ranganation and the show Dance competition Seriously come dancing.

For 26 of these categories, winners are chosen by a nine-member academy jury for each award.

Lydia West nominated for Best Actress for her role as Jill in It’s a Sin

The members of the jury are selected by the Academy’s Television Board.

However, for an award – Must-See TV Moment – sponsored by Virgin Media, the winner is voted on by the public.

This award honors short TV clips from last year that sparked discussion, spawned memes and made people who didn’t watch them come back and watch them online.

Nominations for this category include Ant and Dec removing prime minister Boris Johnson in I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, the scene of Red Light, Blue Light in Netflix beating Squid Game and Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice’s dance to Symphony on Actually Come Dancing.

Other Must See Moment contenders are Bimini Bon Boulash’s UK Hun performing in Ru Paul’s Drag Drace UK, Colin’s Aids Diagnosis in It’s a Sin, and Adele being surprised by her former teacher in An Audience with Adele.

Who will host the Bafta TV awards?

Radio host Vick Hope and TV presenter Zeze Millz will host the awards ceremony this year.

Hope is known for her work on Capital Breakfast as well as featuring Crufts on Channel 4.

Millz is best known for presenting The Zeze Millz Show and is a social media influencer.

What is the Bafta Scholarship?

The Bafta Fellowship is the most prestigious award given by Bafta and recognizes winners’ contributions to film, television or games during their careers.

Sir Billy Connolly will receive a Bafta Fellowship this year – he has previously received three Bafta Awards.

Connolly is best known for his stand-up comedy and numerous television shows including Billy Connolly and World Tour of Scotland.

The comedian stopped performing after being diagnosed with cancer and Parkinson’s disease in 2013 and was unable to attend the ceremony – a taped acceptance speech will be played during the night.
