But what time do the polls open, and how long do you have to vote?

Here’s everything you need to know.

When are polling places open?

Stations across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will all be open at the same time regardless of the issue being voted on.

When do polling stations close?

Voters will have until 10 p.m. on Thursday, May 5 to cast their ballots in person.

What is the deadline to vote by mail?

According to the Election Commission, all ballots must arrive at your local election team by 10 p.m. on polling day.

Those who have chosen to vote by mail will be advised to return their ballots as soon as possible to ensure their votes are counted.

However, if the situation arises that you are unable to submit your ballot before polling day, you can still deliver your voting card directly to your polling place.

Where is my polling station?

If you vote in person or mail your ballot, you will only be able to do so at your designated polling place.

Your polling place address will be printed on your voting card, which will be mailed to your home.

Alternatively, you can find out where you should vote by going to wheredoivote.co.uk and entering your postcode.

Do I need a voting card to vote?

Each registered voter will receive a voting card, which will be mailed to their home address before polling day.

This will highlight your polling place’s address, as well as your name and the date you can vote in person. You should double check that your details on the card are correct before voting.

While it is expected that you will bring your voting card to the polling place, you can still vote if you misplace your card.

You also do not need to provide an ID to vote.

If you do not have a voting card, you can give your name and address to the poll worker at the front station, who will check you and deliver your ballot.

Who is standing in my area?

Across the country, thousands of candidates will face the opportunity to represent constituencies at the local level.
