The singer said on Instagram that he’s been doing facial exercises to try and get moving again
Justin Bieber has revealed he has “complete paralysis” on one side of his face after a virus attacked nerves in his ear.
The pop singer, who has canceled upcoming shows on his Purpose tour, said he has an illness called Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.
But what is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome and is it curable?
Here’s what you need to know.
What is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome?
Ramsay Hunt syndrome is caused by a virus in the facial nerve and is a more serious cause of facial paralysis.
It can cause blisters in the ears and gums, and facial weakness.
Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox.
After the chickenpox subsides, the virus still lives on your nerves and years later it can reactivate. If it does, it can affect your facial nerves, according to the Mayo Clinic.
What are the symptoms of facial nerve disorders?
Facial nerve disorders can cause weakness on one or both sides of your face. You may lose facial expression and find it difficult to eat, drink and speak clearly, and may also find it difficult to close your eyes and blink, which can damage your cornea.
is it curable
According to NHS University Hospital Southampton, “Less than half of patients make a full recovery”.
However, prompt treatment for Ramsay Hunt syndrome can reduce the risk of complications, which can include permanent facial muscle weakness and numbness.
What are the treatments?
Treatments include steroids, antivirals, and advice on eye care and facial rehabilitation.
The following may help relieve the symptoms of Ramsay Hunt syndrome:
- Keep the areas affected by the rash clean
- Apply cool, wet compresses to the rash to reduce pain
- Take an over-the-counter pain reliever or anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen
If you can’t close one of your eyes due to facial weakness, you can use it too
moisturizing eye drops throughout the day if your eye becomes dry and apply ointment to the eye and tape your eyelid shut or wear an eye patch at night.
What did Justin Bieber say about his condition?
The 28-year-old singer posted a video on Instagram and said: “It’s from this virus that’s attacking the nerve in my ear in my facial nerves and has resulted in paralysis of my face.
“As you can see, that eye doesn’t blink. I can’t smile on this side of my face. That nostril won’t move, so that side of my face is completely paralyzed.”
Bieber tried to smile, blink and move his face in the video, but one side remained silent as he continued speaking.
He added, “So for those who are frustrated by my cancellations of the next shows, I’m just physically, obviously, unable to do them. This is pretty serious as you can see.
“I wish that wasn’t the case, but obviously my body is telling me to slow down.
“I hope you understand that and I will use this time to just rest and relax and get back to 100% so I can do what I was born to do. But in the meantime it’s not.”
Bieber said he’s been doing facial exercises to try to get moving again, but added, “We don’t know how long it will be but it will be fine, I have hope and I trust God. I trust that everything has a reason. I’m not sure what this is now, but in the meantime I’ll rest.”
