Hollywood icon Bruce Willis is set to retire from acting after sharing his aphasia diagnosis.

The action star, best known for his appearances on Die Hard, Pulp Fiction and The Sixth Sense, has now ended a remarkable 44-year career.

But what exactly is aphasia and why can’t he work in showbiz anymore?

Bruce Willis was born on March 19, 1955 making his current age 67.

The veteran actor is one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars, reaching the peak of his career in the late 1980s and 1990s.

It was during this time that he became famous for his portrayal of John McClane in the Die Hard film series.

He also appeared in the box office hits Armageddon and The Sixth Sense in the late 1990s.

Bruce also had a starring role on the sitcom Friends, winning an Emmy for his performance on the show.

In recent years, Bruce has appeared in The Expendables franchise alongside fellow action stars Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and reunited on screen with director M. Night Shyamalan in the Unbreakable trilogy, in which he starred opposite James McAvoy and Samuel L. Jackson performed.

He has also turned to music over the years, recording and releasing three solo albums.

Why did Bruce Willis retire from acting?

However, after a glittering on-screen career, the actor announced We were retiring after being diagnosed with aphasia.

His daughter Rumer Willis shared a statement on Instagram which read: “To the amazing supporters of Bruce, we wanted to share as a family that our beloved Bruce is experiencing a number of health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia which is affecting his cognitive abilities.

“As a result, and with much deliberation, Bruce is stepping down from the career that has meant so much to him.

“This is a truly challenging time for our family and we are so grateful for your continued love, compassion and support. We’re moving through this as a strong family unit and wanted to include his fans because we know how much he means to you, just as you mean to him.

“Like Bruce always says, ‘Live it up’ and together we plan to do just that.”

The statement is signed by members of his close family including his ex-wife Demi Moore.

The actor appears to be in good spirits despite the recent diagnosis after his wife Emma Heming posted a video of him playing basketball to Instagram Stories.

She captioned the video, “I see you BeeDub.”

What is aphasia?

Aphasia is a condition in which your ability to communicate is severely impaired.

The condition is usually caused by damage to the left side of the brain, such as a stroke or head trauma.

According to the NHS, people with aphasia often have difficulty understanding and using language, and often have difficulty reading, writing, typing, speaking and listening.

This can include getting words mixed up when speaking, using the wrong word, or using the wrong sounds to pronounce a word.
