22 people have died after an explosion at a luxury hotel in the Cuban capital Havana.
Rescuers searched the rubble throughout the night for more victims of the explosion that injured dozens more.
What caused the explosion?
A natural gas leak was the obvious cause of trouble at the 96-room Havana Hotel Saratoga.
Speaking from the scene on Cuban television, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel told reporters it was not a bombing or an attack, but said “it was just a very worthy accident. regret”.
Mr. Diaz-Canel said 50 adults and 14 children were hospitalized after the blast, and families in buildings near the hotel affected by the blast were moved to safer locations.
The 19th-century structure in the city’s Old Havana neighborhood didn’t have any visitors at the time as it was undergoing remodeling before it was scheduled to reopen on Tuesday.
Relatives of the missing remained at the site of the explosion late on Friday (May 6) as rescuers continued to search through the rubble, while others gathered at the hospital where the missing people were. The injured are being treated.
No tourists were reported injured in the blast, but state television said the government had not yet made public the nationalities of the victims.
