Luck of the Mountaineer is a skill used to uncover hidden items that can be found in a collect button. It can be learned by Miners at level 55 after completing the Job Quest “Same Vein”.

When you learn this action, you will see that it is not like other actions that you can use it immediately. To activate this skill, you need to first achieve a HQ Chain of 2.

This means you will have to do a high quality set three times in a row before Luck of the Mountaineer can be used.

When you’re looking to collect items in FFXIV as a miner or botanist, you’ll typically be looking for that item in your log. There you can see which area and type of button contains the item you are looking for.

For regular items, they will always show up in the specific button type they’re listed below, as long as you’re in the correct area.

This is not the case for hidden items.

Take the example of Black Limestone. This is listed as a hidden item in your mining log and shows that it can be found at Level 50 Rocks in the Quarterstone area of Western La Noscea.

When you get to the respective button in the right area, you will see that not all of them contain Black Limestone. In fact, in some cases, you may find hidden items quite elusive.

This is where Luck of the Mountaineer comes in handy. Using this action will reveal any items that might be hidden in the node that you are currently collecting.

As we mentioned earlier, activating Luck of the Mountaineer requires you to get a HQ sequence of 2 first.

In other words, you will need a high-quality set three times in a row.

When you open your collect UI, you will notice that each item found in the collect button has two percent displayed on it.

  1. The number at the top shows you your chances of successfully collecting that item
  2. The number at the bottom indicates a high-quality collection opportunity

So how can you say that you have succeeded in collecting high quality?

Another thing indicated in your collect UI is how many items a button will yield each time you collect from it. You can find this in the lower right corner of that item’s icon.

Successful collection will count towards your high quality chain if you can get more items than indicated by this number. This is actually a recent change as patch 6.0 removed the HQ material from the game.

Your chances of getting high quality profits can be improved by increasing your Perception stat. That being said, Collecting is just as important, as it affects the probability of a successful collection from a node.

Both unsuccessful collection attempts and normal quality returns will break your HQ chain.
