Watch John Malkovich Turn into Meryl Streep, Che Guevara, Albert Einstein, etc

I start working with John Malkovich more than 20 years ago, when he was an ensemble member of the world famous Steppenwolf Theater Company. I met John during a photo session, and we’ve been friends and collaborators since that first meeting, creating 120 portraits to date. His trust and confidence in my work is unmatched. He gave me many opportunities to work with him. Over the years, I have approached John with a variety of personal projects ranging from short films to photo stories. He never said no, and was always open to my ideas. To me, John is a nice clean canvas ready to be painted. He is extremely open-minded, never afraid and always willing to go places that most actors of his caliber would avoid. He was a genius willing to take chances – a talent for allowing himself to be anything I asked him to be.

In 2011, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. The illness devastated me and made me think about my future as a father, husband and photographer. As a photographer, I’ve spent nearly 38 years doing pretty well, working with some of the biggest clients in the advertising world, winning some of the top awards in the photography industry, and show my personal work in many beautiful galleries around the world. I feel I have achieved more than I ever thought possible as a self-taught photographer.

Days will pass during my recovery and I will think, will I ever take another great photo? A few months after recovering and with much research, I flew to France to see John, armed with a pack of 30 iconic photographs by 28 master photographers. After finishing two bottles of wine, I showed John my idea and he fell in love. I chose John because deep in my heart I know he is the only actor willing to embody the multitude of subjects depicted in the original image. My biggest fear is that people won’t take this project seriously. I don’t want this to be a parody. I am very serious about paying tribute to these photographers and the photos have changed my perspective on photography. These images have inspired me throughout my career and developed me into the photographer I am today. I wanted to honor these great photographers and needed the perfection of an actor who could bring everything to life. After eight months of research, I watched John become a boy, girl, man, woman, Marilyn, Picasso, Hitchcock, Bette Davis and Che Guevara.
