Washington Coach Search: Joe Moorhead, Jay Norvell Among Top Candidates to Replace Jimmy Lake

That escalates quickly, doesn’t it? Washington Coach Jimmy Lake went from winning the Pac-12 North in 2020 (playing only four games) to having to quit less than a year later.

Lake served a one-match suspension after placing his hand on a player last week. Athletic director Jen Cohen then pull the trigger on sunday.

Washington is among the College footballbiggest of the sleeping giants with budget resources and facilities willing to spend to win again. Head coach Don James won the split national championship in 1991.

The UW is a living example of the Pac-12’s frustration. This was the last Pac-12 team to appear in the College Rugby Round. Since that appearance in 2016, the Huskies are 35-19 years old, having lost Chris Petersen essentially.

It can be doubted that retired Petersen is interested in recreating what he built at Montlake over six seasons. Therefore, these are the top coaching candidates to fill the vacancies in Washington.

Joe Moorhead, Oregon attack coordinator: this is not Alabama recruitment By Auburn attack coordinator. The Oregon-Washington rivalry is not so deep. This is Washington trying to stabilize itself. Moorhead put together a Broyles Award level season guiding the Duckling through his own injury and absence due to major surgery. Moorhead’s call tag is an ability that adjusts to fit the staff around him. Check out how he manages the left midfield Anthony Brown.

Jay Norvell, Nevada coach: There may be a tug-of-war between Washington and Washington state for the Nevada coach. I put him on the Wazzu hot list after Nick Rolovich got fired. Norvell has a strong attack ability and a lot of experience in NFL (six years) and Power Five (22 years). The development of QB Strong Carson is a selling point. God knows, Washington can use offensive methods.

Jeff Grimes, Baylor attack coordinator: Grimes spent some spectacular years together at BYU and Baylor. During his final year at BYU in 2020, he coached Zach Wilson, who threw 3,700 yards and had only three interceptions. The Cougars are third nationally in goalscoring and number 1 in yards per play. This season at Baylor, Grimes has taken a former defender Gerry Bohanon and make him a legitimate threat. Abram Smith is a stroller 1,000 yards long. Grimes called a great game in sadness Saturday about Oklahoma.

Brent Brennan, State of San Jose coach: The shine has waned a bit this season after winning the Mountain West in 2020 as Sparta fell 5–6. But surely Brennan will be intrigued by the change of San Jose State and a career devoted entirely to the West. Brennan was a graduate assistant to Rick Neuheisel in 1999.

Jonathan Smith, Oregon State coach: Smith is a loyal Beaver and seems committed to change at his alma mater. But Washington is set to win with the right coach. It has more resources than Oregon State, and if Smith wants to jump to the next level, this is his chance. As long as Cohen can sell a coach with a 15-26 record.

Kaelen DeBoer, State of Fresno coach: DeBoer is making a lot of noise in his 2nd year at Fresno. Washington moved Jake Haener is one of the leading companies in the country. DeBoer won three NAIA national championships at Sioux Falls. Counting 4 years there, he was 78-9 as head coach.
