Video shows saints ‘running back to Alvin Kamara’ attacking ‘clubgoers in Las Vegas at Drai’s With Pals, police say
New Orleans Saints rerun star Alvin Kamara was among the men who broke a man’s eye socket during an altercation at a Las Vegas nightclub the day before playing at the Pro Bowl, according to a report. police report issued by the Las Vegas City Police Department.
Just before 6 p.m. on February 5, a Las Vegas Metro detective was dispatched to Sunrise Hospital to interview victim Darnell Greene, who had been partying at the hospital. Drai’s After Hours, a club at the Cromwell Casino along the Strip. At the hospital, Greene was “still shaking and in pain,” the report said.
Greene said he will leave the club around 6:30 a.m. Saturday and head to the elevator, according to reports.
“There was a bunch of people waiting when he started a conversation with one of them,” it said. “As soon as the elevator opened, Greene and the large group he was talking to began walking toward the open elevator door.”
Then a man – who was later identified as Kamara – “put his hand on Greene’s chest[,] prevent him from entering the elevator,” the report continued.
Greene pushed Kamara’s hand away from her chest, while being “pushed so hard that I tripped again.”
“After Greene was pushed, he said he was hit and kicked by many people and suffered losses. [sic] the report said. “The only person Greene can remember was described as a black male in his 20s, approximately 5’10, muscular and had his hair braided or braided. The suspect wears a gray shirt or gray sweater. “
Doctors told Greene he had a “orbital fracture” of his right eye and said he may need surgery, the report read, adding that Greene’s eye had become so swollen that it could not be opened.
Greene was later released from the hospital, a Sunrise official told The Daily Beast.
In the meantime, investigators reviewed security video from Drai’s. According to ESPN, the footage shows Kamara punching Greene about eight times, including three times after he’s already lying on the floor. That’s when three other people in Kamara’s group allegedly “started stomping around [Greene] on the face, chest and legs,” the newspaper reported.
Kamara was not arrested prior to the Pro Bowl for “reporting delays due to the victim being treated and the incident occurring approximately 10 hours prior,” said Metro spokesman Larry Hadfield. Las Vegas, told The Daily Beast. “It was reported he would be in the Pro Bowl and was interviewed at Allegiant Stadium after the game. He was later arrested and transported to the Clark County Detention Center. ”
During the interview, Det. Austin Bone asked “if he knew why we were talking to him,” he wrote in his affidavit. “Kamara said he knew why and told us what happened.”
The report said Kamara told police that he went to Drai’s house with his girlfriend, assistant and a few friends. While waiting for the elevator, Greene called one of Kamara’s entourage “evil,” he asserted.
“I’ll slap your ass too,” Greene later allegedly told Kamara, who said he “saw a fight breaking out next door and he saw Greene getting punched.”
Kamara said he “threw a few punches, thinking the guy was on the run”, and claimed he didn’t remember hitting Greene when he fell. However, Kamara’s version of events did not match what investigators saw on the tape, according to the police report.
“The video disputes this[,] shows that Greene wasn’t running away but was actually punched by Kamara’s associates and then Kamara immediately attacked him,” the report concludes.
Kamara was later arrested and charged with a battery charge that resulted in substantial bodily harm. He was released after posting a $5,000 bail.
Drai’s manager immediately hung up the phone when contacted by The Daily Beast for comment. Citing confidentiality, Brooks Brothers Bail Bonds, the outfit that got Kamara sent to prison on Sunday, will not discuss any details of the case.
Kamara and Greene could not be reached for comment.
Kamara, 26, caught four 23-yard passes during the game, his fifth Pro Bowl in five NFL seasons. He was scheduled to appear at the Las Vegas Court of Justice on Monday, with another appearance set for March 8.
