Millions of people are expected to attend one of the thousands of local parties and luncheons planned to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee

More than ten million people across the UK are expected to attend one of thousands of local events, including street festivals, to share food and fun with members of their local community in honor of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

In total, more than 16,000 street festivals were organized across the country in honor Your Majesty.

Events range from small picnics to a record breaking 5,000 street party in Morecambe Bay.

The Tower of London, Windsor Great Park, Hillsborough Castle, Lambeth Palace and the Queen’s estates at Sandringham and Balmoral will be lit, among others.

However, this will first happen in Tonga and Samoa in the South Pacific.

So where are these street festivals held and can you attend them?

How many street festival applications have you received?

A quick poll by the LGA of a dozen councils found they had approved more than 1,000 street parties.

If extrapolated across all communities nationwide, that could mean more than 16,000 street festivals to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee.

Hertfordshire Borough Council has received a record 475 applications.

Over the weekend, several communities across England also waived road closure management fees to allow people to host these parties.

During the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, 9,500 roads were closed, the LGA said.

LGA Chair James Jamieson said: “Councils are pulling out all the stops to help their communities celebrate a historic day for our country.

“After two tough years at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, we hope this time allows people to raise a toast and celebrate with loved ones and neighbors.”

When are the street festivals?

The street festivals are set to take place on each of the four days that make up the special bank holiday weekend planned in honor of the Queen.

It takes place between Thursday 2nd June and Sunday 5th June, with parties being organized across the country on each of these four days.

What other local events are taking place across the UK during the Platinum Jubilee weekend?

It’s not just street parties that people throw to celebrate the historic occasion.

The Big Jubilee Lunch, run by the Eden Project, encourages communities to host lunches for loved ones, too.

Over 60,000 people have signed up to host these luncheons over the bank holiday weekend, with events ranging from world record attempts for the longest street party to backyard barbecues.

Peter Stewart, Executive Director of the Eden Project, who chaired the Diamond Big Jubilee Lunch in 2012, said: “Together we are making sure that the Big Jubilee Lunch for HM the Queen’s special platinum celebrations brings millions of people to friendship, food and fun in communities anywhere from June 2nd to 5th.

“Between 10 and 12 million people is a modest estimate of the level of participation, and that’s a testament to the community spirit and appetite for connection we know is out there.”

Where are the street parties and lunches?

At the time of writing, the map contains 3,517 public events and 3,513 street festivals or private events.

London and the South East of England seem to be the most popular locations for anniversary celebrations.

Most events take place in and around central London.

In addition, over 100 are planned in Scotland and around 800 in Yorkshire and the Midlands.

Are events held outside of the UK?

People around the world will celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

In addition, over 600 international luncheons and parties are planned across the Commonwealth and beyond, from Canada to Brazil, New Zealand to Japan and South Africa to Switzerland.

Can I host a street party?

Yes, you can still host your own Platinum Jubilee street party or luncheon event.

Peter Stewart said: “It’s not difficult to host an event of your own – just knock on your neighbours’ door, grab some nibbles and hang the bunting.”

However, if you are looking to host a large anniversary dinner or street party, you may have missed the opportunity as local governments usually require a four to 12 week lead time.

What official events are planned to mark the platinum anniversary?
