Uvalde Aborigine Matthew McConaughey calls for ‘action’ after primary school massacre in his hometown

Matthew McConaughey has issued a “call to action” after a gunman killed 19 children and two adults at an elementary school in his hometown of Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday.

“We have proven once again that we are not responsible for the rights our freedoms grant us,” the actor wrote in a statement on Twitter late Tuesday.

McConaughey urged “every American” to “take a longer, deeper look in the mirror” before asking what “we really value,” saying it’s not enough to simply “take another breath, make excuses, and… to accept these tragic realities as The status quo.”

“As Americans, Texans, moms and dads, it’s time we reevaluate and renegotiate our wants from our needs. We must realign our values and find common ground over this devastating American reality that has tragically become our children’s problem,” he said.

He went on to rail against the “epidemic” of gun violence, which he said is one “we can control.”

“We have to do better. Measures must be taken so that no parent has to experience what parents in Uvalde and the others before them went through,” he wrote.

Although the actor didn’t specifically call for stricter gun regulations in his statement, he previously attended a “March for Our Lives” rally in Austin after 17 people were killed at the shooting range at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018.

At the time, he stressed that while he supported the rights of law-abiding gun owners, banning assault weapons for civilians, closing loopholes on background checks for would-be firearm owners and restricting the capacity of magazines was “a no-brainer.”
