Eight USFL teams to compete in 2022

All eight teams will play games at one venue during the inaugural season. The logos have been updated for the new league, and Fox Sports explains that center placement will be announced at a later date. The league will begin playing in April 2022, with matches every Saturday and Sunday in a 10-game season.

“We are excited to take this important next step in the growth of the new USFL,” said Brian Woods, USFL Executive President of Football. “These eight teams form the core of our initial league membership and will represent an exciting franchise of professional football this spring. We look forward to the inaugural season kicking off.”

The USFL is the third attempt at spring football in the past four years, hoping to last a season after the American Football Union collapsed due to financial problems in 2019 and the XFL was canceled in 2019. 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic (XFL is currently aiming to return in 2023). The USFL originally debuted in 1983 and lasted three seasons.

The USFL originally kicked off the careers of Herschel Walker, Reggie White and many others due to their superior competitive salaries. NFL the player is making money at the time. But the lack of a hard salary cap resulted in unsustainable payrolls, contributing to the league’s destruction. The tournament starts with 12 teams and has a territory draft, to load up the lineup with familiar stars of local co-workers to attract fans.

That version of the USFL was discontinued in 1986. It voted to move from a spring to fall schedule to eventually compete with the NFL — an attempt to force a merger between the leagues. The USFL won an antitrust lawsuit against the federation because the NFL violated antitrust laws, but the USFL won just $1 — and closed it in the following months.

Fox Sports will act as the tournament’s original broadcast partner.

Here’s how we rank the “new” USFL team names and their revised logos as they’re months away from the start of the tournament:

1. Philadelphia Stars

The original two-time USFL champions got one of the league’s better logo designs and uniforms in the 1980s. The updated Stars logo with a modern twist will be a great fit during the rebirth.

2. Birmingham Stallions

One of the most popular teams in the original USFL still has one of the most popular names – and one of the most beautiful logos. This version looks even better than the popular version from the 1980s.

3. New Jersey Generals

Another modern team logo, keeping the bright reds, whites, royal blues and sunflower yellows that made them popular in the 1980s.

4. Tampa . Bay Bandits

The name was actually named after original owner John Bassett’s dog “Bandit,” but the moniker is only fitting as one of the original USFL trademarks.

5. Houston Gamblers

Not one of the original USFL franchises (from 1983), but Gamblers is a hilarious moniker. Keeping the color “Gambler Red” will enhance this.

6. Pittsburgh Maulers

Named after the workers wielding sledgehammers in the steel foundry, the name fits the city. They’ve basically kept the same logo from 1984, which is great for establishing a brand – even if it’s tough to compete with. Steelsmith.

7. New Orleans Breakers

While this is a name passed down from Boston, the name comes from a large ocean wave crashing on the shore. Given the storm damage New Orleans has suffered over the past 15 years, this probably isn’t the best idea.

8. Michigan Panthers

The USFL champions were originally a charter member, but only lasted one season in the USFL. The NFL now has the Panthers, so the USFL could have done better here. Why not Memphis Showboats?
