US retail sales up 1.7% in October

With pandemic-related disruptions still a reality, families continue to shift spending from the services sector to consumer goods. Some of the biggest sales gains last month came from industries traditionally buying holiday gifts: Sales at electronics and appliance stores rose 3.8% from September , while sporting goods, musical instruments and bookstores recorded an increase of 1.5%. Meanwhile, spending at restaurants and bars remained flat.
