Some First Photos from Hulu’s New True Crime Docuseries The girl from Plainville was released, and in it, the star Elle Fanning can’t look like her. What she looks like is the saliva and image of the real-life woman she is portraying, Michelle Carter, the defendant of the infamous “texting suicide” case, Commonwealth of Massachusetts sues Michelle Diana Carter.
Carter gained national notoriety when in 2014 she sent a series of messages encouraging her friend, 18-year-old Conrad Roy, to commit suicide. Roy then took his own life by inhaling carbon monoxide. Carter was found guilty by a jury in 2017 and then served 11–12 days of a 15-month sentence before being released early for good behavior. The trial and subsequent appeals created a series of public debates about how responsible Carter was for Roy’s death.
Carter’s case was the subject of the 2019 HBO documentary I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth vs. Michelle Carter, directed by Erin Lee Carr.
The photo shows Fanning’s make-up team – aided by her own fair share of analogies – transforming her into Carter’s eerie doppelganger, mimicking her tall hairstyle and dramatic brows. it’s perfect.
The girl from Plainville will mark Fanning’s second outing with Hulu. Fanning received critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination for her work as Catherine in The Network. Wonderful thing. Fanning shares the executive producer’s credit for the acclaimed series and will do so again for this latest effort. Mindhunter’s Liz Hannah and Dr. Death’s Patrick Macmanus will act as host on The girl from Plainville. The miniseries will also feature Cara Buono and Kai Lennox as Carter’s parents Gail and David, as well as Chloe Sevigny and Norbert Leo Butz as Roy Lynn and Conrad’s parents.
Based on Tonight’s reception, series based on Mr. article of the same name written by journalist Jesse Barron. About Carter, Barron told ET, “I find it hard to believe that there are other stories in Michelle’s mind that remind her of what was happening at the time. And I think the question is whether she’s writing some kind of story in her head or writing some movie that for some reason has to end with his death.”
It remains to be seen how much and what parts of that story make it an upcoming drama.
Hulu will release The girl from Plainville this spring.
