The Indie Game Festival awards and the Game Developers Conference awards were held last night on cyberspace. Like a Zoom meeting for the soul, the ceremony took place in the living room of the winning game developers, with host Victoria Tran (community director of Among Us) putting it all together with the Remarkable combination of enthusiasm, sincerity and silence. She got IGF from me.
The big winner is The Umurangi generation by Origame Digital. The photography sci-fi game won the ‘Seumas McNally Grand Prize’ and the IGF awards for narrative. Hades was also recognized as Game of the Year at the GDC Awards. The rest of the winners, and the whole amazing ceremony, are below.
Lovely, detailed and dark Genesis Noir by Feral Cat Den is another twin winner. It has won both ‘Acoustic Excellence’ and ‘Visual Arts Excellence’ awards. Less gentle Destroy from Tuxedo Labs is the winner of the ‘Design Excellence’ award, because people love sledgehammers.
Blaseball of The Game Band took home the ‘Nuovo Award’, the award given to the game that made jurors ‘think differently about the game as a vehicle’. Local Space Survey Corps’ creepy space adventure game Vessels is ‘Best Student Game’. Finally, at least from IGF, the black and white puzzle adventure game, Arrog won the ‘Audience Award’.
Along with being hailed as game of the year, Hades also received awards for ‘Best Sound’ and ‘Best Design’ at the GDC ceremony. Well done, Supergiant Games!
‘Best debut’ was awarded to Kinetic Games spooky work The fear of phasmophobia, when The Genshin effect won the ‘Best Mobile Game’ award for miHoYo. ‘Best Technology’ won by Microsoft Flight Simulator. Asobo Studio has somehow rendered the entire world, so that’s to be expected. Half-life: Alyx by Valve won the ‘Best VR/AR Game’. If you skip to 57:50 in the video above, they’ve managed to make receiving the prize amazingly scary.
Everything went well at the ‘Innovation Award’, given to Dreams by Media Molecule. Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II won the ‘Best Voiceover’ award. Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima won ‘Best Visual Arts’ and ‘Audience Awards’, but on top of that it won the ‘Award for Favorite Craig Console Game on the Internet’. PC’.
Newsgrounds ‘Tom Fulp has been awarded the ‘Pioneer Award’, presumably for the site and not for scaling a mountain or skinning a goat. Laralyn McWilliams, who was the lead developer of Full Spectrum Warrior and creative director of Sony’s Free Realms, won a Lifetime Achievement Award.
What a great morning all winners must have now. Congratulations to the winners, nominees and others, as we can all use the prize now.
