President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the possible number of casualties was “unimaginable,” adding that the firing center had no “strategic value” and posed no threat to Russian forces.

What happened in the attack on the Kremenchuck mall?

The mall was hit by the missile during the day on Monday, June 27.

Images on social media show people standing outside the building and black smoke billows from the building.

Speaking on the messaging app Telegram, President Zelensky said: “The occupiers fired rockets at the mall, which housed more than a thousand civilians.

“The shopping center is on fire, rescue workers extinguish the fire, the number of victims is unimaginable. “

Was the airstrike a Russian attack?

Ukraine has said it believes Russia is responsible for the attack.

President Zelenskyy said: “Russia continues to take its impotence out on ordinary citizens. It is useless to hope for decency and humanity from Russia.”

However, Russia has so far not claimed responsibility for the missile attack, but in the past has denied that troops are deliberately targeting civilian sites.

Why was Kremenchuk targeted?

Located in central Ukraine, the city of Kremenchuk is home to the country’s largest oil refinery.

Kremenchuk is also the administrative center of Kremenchuk Raion in Poltava Oblast.

Although it has not been confirmed that the mall was hit, President Zelensky stated that the civilian building posed “no threat to the Russian army,” adding that the building’s destruction would confer “no strategic value” on Russian troops.

“Russia continues to take its impotence out on ordinary citizens. It is useless to hope for decency and humanity from Russia.”

How many people were injured?

More than 1,000 people are said to have been in the building at the time of the attack.

Kyryl Tymoshenko, deputy head of the presidential office, said at least two people were killed and around 20 injured, nine of them in serious condition.

Later, Dmitry Lunin, the governor of the Poltava region, confirmed that the death toll had risen to 10.

He also warned that number could rise again as authorities and emergency services scramble to deal with the aftermath of the missile attack.
