Tyra Banks is producing a show about teen drag performers despite ‘ANTM’ recent backlash

Tyra Banks is producing a new Discovery+ show about teen queens—that is, drag queens. Title Drag generation, The series will explore the colorful, creative world of teen drag games.
Drag generation focuses on five children — Noah, Jameson, Vinny, Bailey, and Nabela — and their families. It marked the lead-up to the most important performance of these teens’ lives at Dragutante, a non-profit event that allows LGBTQ+ youth to network, meet mentors in the community pull together and at the end of the day, stomp on their own shows.
The heartwarming trailer, released on Tuesday, shows a glimpse of the kids’ journey to Denver, where Dragutante takes place. Between clips of a sweet father supervising as his child tries on a pair of pale pink boots and a mother clad in a loofah tulle skirt, the teenagers diligently line their brows and braid her candy colored wig.
“So my mom started Dragutante,” one person explained of the eagerly anticipated event. “Children and their families come from all over the country where we get to be who we really are.” Family group hugs a lot. I’m not crying, you’re crying.
However, the documents come amid controversy surrounding the treatment of contestants behind the scenes of Banks’ long-running reality show, Vietnam’s Next Top Model. March, Bustle published a revealing article about contestant Angelea Preston, who won Season 17 of ANTM but was stripped of her title due to her past working as a prostitute. A little while later Bustle published articles, Business Insider alleges that the producers created unsafe conditions to maximize the film, leading to women having panic attacks and being denied medical treatment. One contestant described her time on the show as “psychological warfare”.
Last month’s backlash against ANTM far from the first time the show was shown. For years, people have been calling the Banks and sharing problematic moments from the show, such as the many blackface-related photo sessions. And yet, Banks are still booking and busy, storing Dancing with the stars, produce new projects and even take on roles in new movies.
Regardless of the Bank’s involvement, Drag generation admittedly this will be a celebration that elevates the loving spirit of self-expression in LGBTQ+ kids. We’ll personally follow Noah, Jameson, Vinny, Bailey, and Nabela — and beauty tips.
Watch a bunch of 9th graders do better makeup than most full grown adults when all six episodes of Drag generation released on June 1.
