On Thursday, the streaming service announced its new project, titled “New Look,” which provides a script for the stories of Christian Dior and Coco Chanel, focusing on the former fashion designer’s meteoric rise to prominence and how he dethroned the world’s most famous fashion designer. The film is set against the Nazi occupation of Paris during World War II and is inspired by real events.
Based on Apple televisionPress release by +, the series “circles the pivotal moment in the 20th century when Paris leads the world back to life through its fashion icons.” The show will also include the story of Pierre Balmain, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Hubert de Givenchy, Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent.
Emmy Award-winning actor Ben Mendelsohn, known for his role on the Netflix series “Bloodline,” has been cast as Dior. French actress Juliette Binoche, known for her roles in “The English Patient” and “Chocolat,” will play the role Chanel.
The title of the series pays homage to Dior’s first collection in 1947, where he introduced a “new look”, a style featuring round shoulders, a tight belt and a full skirt. The new look celebrates the femininity and fashion of women after years of utilitarian war dress.
A release date for “The New Look” has yet to be revealed and filming has yet to begin, but the show will be filmed exclusively in Paris.
