(The hill) – Senator Lindsey Graham (RS.C.) on Thursday called for “someone in Russia” to take out Russian President Vladimir Putin amid the invasion of Ukraine.

“Is there a Brutus in Russia? Is there a more successful Colonel Stauffenberg in the Russian military?” Graham Posted on Twitter with reference to the assassin of Julius Caesar and the attempted assassination of Adolf Hitler.

“This can only end if someone in Russia takes out this guy. You would be doing your country – and the world – a great service,” added Graham.

Graham’s tweet comes amid accusations against Russia and Putin of war crimes; Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US officials say the Russian president is targeting civilian areas like hospitals and schools.

Graham’s comments quickly drew rebukes from Republicans and Democrats on Twitter, who said it was irresponsible for a US official to call for the death of another country’s leader.

“Seriously, wtf?” representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) tweeted. “I really wish our members of Congress would cool it down and regulate their remarks while the administration works to avoid WWlll. While the world is watching how the US and its leaders respond, Lindsey’s remarks and comments from some members of the House of Representatives are unhelpful.”

Fellow GOP Sen. ted cruz (Texas) also condemned Graham’s comments.

“That’s an exceptionally bad idea. Deploy massive economic sanctions; BOYCOTT Russian oil and gas industry; and provide military assistance so Ukrainians can defend themselves.” Cruz tweeted. “But we should not call for the assassination of heads of state.”

Graham went on to say that the Russian people are the only way to end Putin’s rule as thousands of Russians have been arrested for protesting the invasion of Ukraine.

“The only people who can fix this are the Russians. Easy said, hard to do,” Graham said in a follow-up tweet.

“If you don’t want to live in darkness for the rest of your life, be isolated from the rest of the world in abject poverty and live in darkness, you have to put yourself at the top,” he added. ‘Turn off this guy’: Graham demands ‘someone in Russia’ to assassinate Putin
