Trump discusses if he or DeSantis will run in 2024

In one Radio interview with Florida radio host Brian Mudd, former President Trump went on to emphasize that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis would not run for office in 2024, but then went on to comment on both the 2024 race and Desantis’ 2018 directorial win.

In the past, Trump has said that if both he and DeSantis ran for office, he thought DeSantis would drop out. However, it’s not because he thinks DeSantis lacks talent or will lose, but because avoiding a fight would benefit the team.

During the interview with Mudd, Trump commented on the idea of ​​​​letting DeSantis run and had this to say:

“I thought if I ran, he wouldn’t. I know they try and create friction. I don’t think it exists at all. It may, you know, you never know. If he wants to run, I’m fine. I think we will win a lot. But he’s good. And he has done a very good job as Governor.”

As usual, it’s a quick comment, but also somewhat ambiguous. What’s clear is that Trump thinks either he or DeSantis will run and win in 2024. That’s probably true, at least in terms of the Republican primaries, as Trump and DeSantis increasingly far the most popular candidates among likely GOP voters.

Trump, however, even more supported than DeSantis, with two-thirds of GOP members wanting Trump and only 13% of GOP members preferring DeSantis to Trump.

What’s not clear, based on Trump’s comments to Mudd, is what Trump thinks would happen if both of them ran for president because of the remark “If he wants to run, I’m fine. I think we will win a lot. ” can mean two things.

On the one hand, it could imply that Trump plans to drop out or not run for office if DeSantis decides to run. That’s probably the best thing for the party, as it will avoid a fight between MAGA bases.

On the other hand, it could mean that Trump thinks DeSantis will beat him in the primaries if both men run. Given the former president’s staunch pro-win, that interpretation is perhaps less likely.

DeSantis, for his part, told Fox that “It’s the way down. It’s not anything that I’m planning” when asked about whether he will run for office in 2024.

What was evident, at least for now, was a distinct lack of animosity between the two men or anxiety about who would run.

Based on Trump’s comments and DeSantis’ uncommitted attitude, it seems very likely that one of them will run and be supported by the other, as they like each other and are like-minded stars in GOP.
