Trooping The Color 2022: What is the Queen’s Birthday Parade?
This year, the celebration, which begins at Buckingham Palace, will take place during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations
This annual event has now marked the British Sovereign’s official birthday for over 260 years.
But what exactly is Trooping the Colorhow is it celebrated and when does it take place this year?

What is Trooping the Color?
Trooping the Color is held annually in St James’s Park in central London, one of London’s eight Royal Parks.
It takes place at the park’s ceremonial parade ground, Horse Guards Parade.
It is a colorful military parade of the Household Division and comes from two older military ceremonies; Trooping the Color and Mounting the Queen’s Guard, both beginning in the early 18th century.
When is Trooping the Color in 2022?
The Queen’s Birthday Parade usually takes place in early June.
Two rehearsals will take place in the two weeks leading up to the event.
The Major General’s Review is usually held on the Saturday two weeks before the parade, which is Saturday May 21st.
The Colonel’s Review is usually held on the Saturday the week before the parade, which is Saturday May 28th.
What will happen during Trooping the Color?
The event begins when the Queen inspects the troops herself.
The color is the battalion flag, slowly drawn or carried through the ranks of the soldiers.
This was traditionally done so that each man was familiar with his battalion’s flag, which served as a staging point during battle.
The flag will be carried by the 1st Battalion of the Irish Guards and more than 1200 officers and men from the Household Division will display military displays at the Horse Guards Parade along with hundreds of army musicians and around 240 horses.
A royal salute is also fired.
As in years past, once the parade has ended and the royal procession has returned to Buckingham Palace, the Royal Family’s balcony appearance will take place.
There will also be a special flyby by the Royal Air Force to coincide with the Royal Family’s balcony appearance.
When does Trooping the Color take place?
The parade begins at Horse Guards at 10:00 am and ends at 12:25 pm.
The special overflight time is at 1 p.m.
How do I get Trooping the Color tickets?
Seated grandstand tickets around Horse Guards Parade were allocated by vote in March. So if you haven’t secured tickets, it’s not possible to get them now.
People who have successfully applied for tickets have been notified by email and invited to purchase their tickets.
How can I watch Trooping the Color?
The procession can be seen along the grand processional route of The Mall or at the edge of St James’s Park overlooking Horse Guards Parade.
Spectators in London will have the opportunity to follow the event on large screens in St James’ Park.
People from across the UK can watch the event live on BBC and Sky, and viewers can even tune in from abroad.
