EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – An El Paso, Texas, Dentists are warning people not to try a dangerous new viral trend: cleaning your teeth with Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.
The trend has gained traction on social media platform TikTok, with the original video gaining more than 255,000 likes since it was posted in June.
Magic Eraser is a line of sanitary pads branded Mr. Clean is made with chemicals that should not be consumed or used on any body part.
Dr Richard Black, dean of the Hunt School of Dental Medicine, says trying dangerous trends like this one can cause lifelong damage to your teeth.
“It’s one of the worst things you can do to your teeth because bleach is too strong,” Black says. “It may work once, but if you keep doing it, you’ll remove the enamel that surrounds your teeth.”
A Plano orthodontist responded to the video, saying the cleaning pad is made of melamine foam, which acts like “really abrasive sandpaper”, essentially scrubbing away enamel.
“She’s afraid of fluoride, but is she great at using Magic Eraser on her teeth?” he asks.
The company’s packaging warns users to “do not use on skin or other parts of the body.”
Parent company Procter & Gamble did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
